I paid $13K for this pattern which sold at Heritage for $11,500 in June 2004.
I call it the "father" of the flowing hair design.
William Barber was also the father of Charles Barber who designed the 1879 $4 flowing hair Stella which I think was actually an inferior design!
William Barber was the US Mint 5th Chief Engraver (1869-1879). He passed away on August 31, 1879 and was succeeded by Charles Barber who designed the barber dime, quarter and half as well as the Liberty head nickel. Charles Barber was also more well known for his battles against President Teddy Roosevelt many years later.
I believe this flowing hair design was one of the last three designs ever done by William Barber and also believe it was one of his finest.
