# of folks tracking any given Heritage lot

I was wondering whether anyone tries to read the tea leaves based on the number of potential bidders that appear as tracking any given Heritage lot. Do you get discouraged (as a buyer) to see mutlitudes of people tracking, or excited with lack thereof? Figure it is all bunk until the money is on the table, so to speak?

I have found that the number of people tracking has very little to do with the number of bidders or the end price. At least for the auctions I bid on.

I have about 20 lots that I am tracking at Heritage now on 3 different auctions.

When it comes down to it I will bid on 3 or maybe 4 lots out of the 20.

I track some lots just to see how folks bid on certain pieces.

The number of people tracking is not a very good indicator of how the lot will do at sale time.

  • The number of potential bidders tracking lots at Heritage is probably related to # of bidders watching eBay items. Not many translate into actual bids !

I've never really studied the usage, but when someone asks me about the feature, I recommend it to people who (1) are thinking of bidding; (2) are thinking of selling; (3) just want to watch the particular item for whatever reason.

Other than items I track strictly for site testing purposes, and there are a lot of those, I will often track
1799 dollars in VF20. I own one (common variety, unfortunately), and want to follow how much these are selling for.Really expensive stuff. Because I can.Anything that hasn't actually gone up for auction yet that I know I want to bid on or at least that I'm seriously considering. You can track things that are still in previews, and if you do so, they're already there and handy in one place when bidding starts. You can also add notes to anything you've tracked.Anything that obviously isn't worth the minimum $1 bid + $9 BP. For comedic purposes because sometimes really weird stuff will slip into an auction.
I suppose the far-thinking numismatic researcher might also be able to take advantage of the tracking system. Once you track something, it stays tracked unless you remove it, and you will always be able to get to it through the MyTrackedLots page. The ability to add notes directly to the items potentially makes this use very valuable.
    Sincerely,

When tracking Capped Bust series and the number of watchers is high, it probably means others have determined the variety is special.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
