Need suggestions for my "Founding Fathers" display.

UncleJoeUncleJoe Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭
I recently purchased a framed print entitled "Founding Fathers". It is mostly red white and blue with the American flag in the center and pictures of the Washington Monument, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and a couple of other pictures surrounding the flag.

I would like to make a display of coins to hang below the picture that will complement the print. I thought about early coins and then about coins that dipicted the individuals involved or a combination thereof etc.

$3,000 or less is the budget for the coins. Any suggestions?

Joe.

A photograph of the centerpiece would help to get the creative juices flowing.

You may want to include the reverse of the $2 bill somewhere in there.

The framed print is being mailed to me (bought it on a Carnival cruise). I couldn't locate a copy of the print to post.

How about the following in PCGS PR69DCAM holders?

1976-S Lincoln (figuring 1976 because of the bicentennial thing...)
    1976-S Jefferson
    1976-S Washington
    1976-S Kennedy
    1976-S Eisenhower

...and maybe pickup a new Ben Franklin Founding Father Commem. Proof Dollar in PCGS PR69DCAM as well????

You really outta PM "solid" (Ken) here on the boards...he has some great display options for coins in PCGS/NGC holders...

    Have fun with it...

  • My 2 cents-------re-frame the print with space left to incorporate the coins/$2 bill (?) in the new print matting. A frame shop or you could make the appropriate size holes in the mat --I recommend double matting with the coin holes cut in the top mat. I think that this option wouold look better than a separate framed group of coins.

Sounds good. By the way how much of a design fee are we getting here? image

If I use someone's idea, I guess I will have to give away a coin! image

You might buy a Fugio Cent in mid- grade to mount with a Contenental paper issue and the $2 bill reverse-that's probably within the $3000 limit, and an awful lot of history spanded by the 3 pieces.

My idea is free--just post a picture of the finished project.

There is a lot to choose from. Personally, I would be hesitant to have $3000 or even $1000 worth of coins for public display. If a person does so, don't answer the how much question, because it will attract unnecessary attention. Say something like "a few dollars" so word doesn't get out that so-and-so has $3k on display in their home or office. Word can get around and often to the wrong crowd.

For framed on a wall, I would lean towards currency. It is easy to find examples with Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson. Circulated Red Seals or Blue Seals would look cool and cost very little. Horseblankets (large size notes before 1924) in circ are cool and not a lot of money either. Currency is a lot easier to see because of distance. For coins, the observer has to get very close to see what they are.

Esoteric coins such as the Lincoln commem half would not be recognized by most observers. Early medals are another idea and some are affordable. English coins from 1776 that circulated at the time are another idea to add, as well as some Continental currency. For public display, I would certainly consider replicas.

Are there replicas of Fugio Cents? I beleive that a legally produced replica will have "COPY" stampled on the reverse.

I'm beginning to warm up to the currency idea but I do want to display coins as well. I just haven't settled on which ones.

I still think I am leaning toward early coins.
