Can dipped coins be graded MS65?

drddmdrddm Posts: 5,371 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have some very nice Liberty nickels in PCGS MS64 holders and was thinking about sending them in for regrade but was wondering as some were dipped in the past, could they be upgraded to MS65 or will MS64 be the highest grade they can achieve?

Any thoughts?

  • Yes dipped coins can be graded much higher than an MS65......now whether they should be or not is up for debate image Problem is that so many coins have diped that it's actually tougher to find coins that have no been messed with. image

    Dipped can grade MS66-67???

Not with 20th century gold! What kind of coins will grade out?

  • Morgan Silver Dollars would be a great example of Dipped coins grading higher the MS65.....all those blast white lovelies in MS66 and MS67.........I don't think all those were stored in a vaccum image

    Thanks for the info.

I think I will give it a shot then and submit them in for regrade.

Yes, stop thinking (edited to add: over analyzing), asking and talking about submitting/re-submitting your coins and get to it. image It's been months now - if you want to try it, go ahead and go for it.

I remember when I went to the ANA grading class and they showed me a dipped coin that was graded 67 and they told me why it was a 67.

Yes, how do you know your nickels were dipped? (Dips are usually used on silver coins to remove silver oxides. Nickels are primarily copper, and thus would form copper oxides, which if removed would probably be BB for altered surfaces.)

I was told my coins were dipped by a VERY respected and reputable dealer whom I trust very much.

I'm not expecting that all the coins will go up to 65 but hoping a couple will.

However, with the way PCGS is grading lately, I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up, huh?

Either way, we'll see what they come back as I just returned from the post office and sent them to PCGS.

Not sure about dipping nickels. It's generally reserved for silver coins, and sometimes clads.

As for Morgan dollars, I've seen more PCGS/NGC pieces graded MS67 and even MS68 than I can recall, and some were really dipped out to the max.

As far as PCGS/NGC DMPL's go, it's actually hard to find one that hasn't been dipped out numerous times with each successive crackout image

I think most blast white silver coins that are 100 plus years old plus have been dipped at some time. This will not work with copper. Don't know about gold. A proper dip will get rid of crud - ie., oxides, that have formed a layer on top of the surfaces of a coin, and not eat into the coin's surfaces themselves.

Don't know about nickels. The only dipped nickels I've seen were dipped to remove carbon flecks. The carbon flecks were removed, but white 'stains' were left where the carbon flecks used to be, and the coins still IMO were not attractive, although they were holdered by PCGS.

I would think the main differences between a Liberty Nickel in 4 & 5 would be contact marks and eye appeal (note, the bar is set far lower re the eye appeal test for a Liberty Nickel than for a silver coin of that era).

Regardless of the dipping, I don't see why you think a PCGS coin graded MS64 would be graded MS65 unless you have past experience professionally grading. Wouldn't it make more sense in the future, to submit coins through a PCGS dealer who can review them in the holder for potential upgrades?

Yes. If your nickels have the right look to them....go for it. Maybe test the waters by sending PCGS the best single example you feel will MS65 and see what happens.image

In my experience, the highest grades in the early nickel series are reserved for coins that have been dipped. image

There is no shortage of PCGS and NGC Liberty Seated Type coins that are dipped and grading up to MS68. Let's just say that most dipped seated half dimes and dimes I see in 67 and 68 holders sort of make me cringe. The halves and quarters don't end up as 68's very often so 67 is about as high as you see a MS coin.

20th century silver - the norm is to dip it. I would guess dipped vs undipped must run 3:1.

A more commonly asked question is whether an UNdipped coin can be graded MS65.

    CG
  • It all depends on the length, degree and amount of dipping----the longer the better !!!
