If you had $50,000 or maybe a touch more, what would you buy???

segojasegoja Posts: 6,136 ✭✭✭✭
Asked a few dealers here in Chicago.

Responses:

A bunch of 3 legged MS Buffaloes....NO

A really nice 1909 VBD Proof Cent... a definite possibility...I'll look at the 66 in the Heritage Auction

A Quintuple Eagle... again a definite possibility...there are about 4-5 in the LB auctions.

A 1796 $2 1/2 About $100K, but mught stretch

Your thoughts???

    That sounds like work...but I hear you.

    Could be a way to double your money and corner the cameo market. Where do I start looking???

    A down payment on a '15s oct pan pac?
  • To spend on coins I'd go with:

    All no S proofs PCGS graded
    1990 1 cent PF 69dcam $15,000
    1971 5 cent PF 69cam $5,000
    1970 10 cent PF 69 cam $6,000
    1983 10 cent PF 69 dcam $2,000
    1968 10 cent PF 68 $32,000

    You got my address. So I'm $10 grand over. image

    As for coins? Something you don't see every day or at every show. Rarer MS64-65 Barber Halves, Proof Gold [pre 1933], Red Large Cents, a nice Chain cent.

    For continued demand and desireablity no one can beat any nice original 1796/7 half dollar. It's just a really tough coin that people will always want, and provake conversation among the most jaded dealers or collectors.

  • I could round up 8 to 10 houses where I live for that kind of money. They wouldn't be pretty, but they'd be free and clear and the rental income would mean never working for somebody else again.

    Edited to add: $50K is so far out of my ball park that I can't even conceive of spending that much on a coin.

    Wha??? Good Lord man where do you live? Because I'm moving...we're about to be neighbors. 50K barely covers a down payment on a respectable house here.

    Assuming that it was money I didn't need for anything else I would buy some nice CC Morgans to upgrade my set with or maybe some nice DMPL's. $50K is approx what you would have left AFTER expenses if you had a 5 number $100K winner in POWERBALL. At today's prices $50K really wouldn't buy very much; you could get a 89-cc in ms63 and a 92-s in 58 and that mite be about it. 2 measly coins.

    Normally I'd say gem type coins...but there are none to be found.

    So I'd buy a mix of gold stocks, silver bullion, and some gold bullion.
    Note- not a particularly good call based on what happened Friday.
    Maybe buy some gold and bullion once it finished correcting.......

    They hold their value through market ups and downs.
  • ScarsdaleCoinScarsdaleCoin Posts: 5,232 ✭✭✭✭✭
    I would suggest spreading out your dollars into 3=5 really nice rare coins.... for example you could pick up an 1842-C $5 small date pcgs F15 for around $7-$8k theres a popular coin with maybe 30 pieces in the pop total and all the higher grades run $25-$150k.... so the lower grade would be desirable and affordable to the collector market without being too over the top....

    If we have to use the entire $50,000+ on coins, here are a couple of options:

    * All of the CC-mint dimes from 1871 to 1874 in choice VF to EF condition;
    * 1796-97 Draped Bust/Small Eagle Half Dollar in F-12.

    I don't think a sharp market correction would hurt either one of these very much.
  • LincolnCentManLincolnCentMan Posts: 5,347 ✭✭✭✭
    Key dates in PQ for the grade PCGS holders. I'd probably go for 10-15 in the $3500-$5000 range.
