Buy a ½ ounce platinum proof coin or a really nice coin, or 2 or 3 for a Dansco 7070?

Hello,

If you had “only” about $800 to spend for the rest of this year on your coin budget, would you consider buying one of the ½ ounce platinum proofs for this year, before they sell out, or would you rather spend that money on one or more type coins for a Dansco 7070?

Given only thofe options I'd go for the 7070 plan.
  • Type coins any day--why not split the difference and buy a nice gold type?
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • Thank you for the reply, Cladiator. I'm torn.

I was beginning to wonder if I had to get my post count over 100, or something, before you guys would reply.

If the Platinum Proofs sell out - they're going to be valued stricktly as bullion pieces.

    Buy what you like.

That's the hang up. I really like platinum, and that 3 coin series sounds neat, but I would like to complete my Dansco as well, with nice examples. So far it sounds like the 7070 path is the most popular. Not bad advice.
  • Good pint by FullStrike. Don't let the fear of a sellout drive your choice. Go out and buy a coin that will make you happy the rest of the year. Then, reformat your computer's hard drive and do your budget again making sure you still have $800 in your coin budgetimage

When it comes to coins I go crazy if I can't make a purchafe for any length of time. So, for me, buying the one platinum coin and then not being able to buy any more for 7 months would be unbearable. By following the other option at leaft I'd be able to make a handfull of coin purchafes in that 7 month period.

Good point. If I go too long without a coin purchase, and that is not a very long time, I start to itch.

I say go platinum, there's not going to be a sell out, but if the prices keep rising, there will be a temporary closure of the program. Then the buffalo gold coins are going to come out, and I think people will lose interest in the proof platinums, leading to lower prices.

The 1/4th oz has lower prices than the half oz in 2006-- do you consider getting one of those?

Go with the type coins. For $800 you can get an AU bust half dime and AU bust dime and have some change left over for some other neat coins for the 7070.

Unless a person is building a 1/2 oz platinum date set, I don't see the point. Buy one of the smaller platinum coins and spend the balance on the 7070 set. One coin a year, especially a bullion coin, just doesn't do anything for me. However, always, always, collect what you like.

If I were you, I would go for the type coins for the Dansco 7070. I think you will enjoy the classic type coins much better and they also come with a lot of history.

The nice thing about 2006 is that it's the first of a three year set-- it'll be a complete set once you get 2007 and 2008. There's always the risk the program could be pulled if platinum goes too crazy, though.

Kiyote, I was considering the 1/2 ounce because it has the lowest mintage of all the platinum proofs offered this year and it's not as tiny as, say, the 1/4 ounce coin, and I like the idea of the 3 year set. I don't plan on buying one for every year after that or before this year, but that 3 coin set over 3 years with a different reverse design every year is interesting. The coins barndog mentioned just happen to be holes I have yet to fill. I like hearing all the different opinions you guys offer because often there is a point I never considered. Thank you.
  • Well neither, but if forced, it'd be the type coin.
What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?
