    electrotype
below average quality electrotype at best image

    definately NOT a betts electrotype

all the above based on the photos
  • Lets see:

--not his coin--it's assigned from someone else
--he will "resolve issues", not return
--wants cashier's check or money order
    --the assigned grade is "high"
    --and as usual, it's raw

Maybe he sells Vaseline for his happy bidders tooimage

Bidders identities protected...how thoughtful of the seller avoiding the posse and protecting his ASSets...and as for the scammed buyer for spending $3000.00 a very little homework could have saved alot of grief.

I was watching some of their other auctions that had just ended recently..... more similar items. They sold groups of 4-5 coins, all piled together, with what appeared to be old gold coins combined with .... a couple of junk coins. The same smelly odor emanated from these auctions. Same terms, descriptions, etc.

I don't get it. Is Savannah GA known for electrotypes?

You never heard of the Savannah scammer? There have been many posts about this e-bay crook. He is quite famous on the forum.

I e-mailed him this AM [before the auction closed] to ask if it was an electrotype...no response.

    This ended at $5111.00

If this coin is genuine, the color tells me that it is corroded. The sharpness is VF, but given the corrosion, the piece is worth no more than half and probably less than what a no problem VF would bring.

Early copper is bear with good surfaces. It’s the main reason why nice coins are so expensive.

  • Irvin Clark and Pam Donnelly get away with highway robbery on a regular basis.

Bill if you had to guess, do you think this one is genuine? Pam Donnelly has sold many coin reproductions not labelled as such.

  • Unbelievable that someone would pony up that kind of cash for something like that in the raw.

The reverse seems wrong to me on the auction coin. A real 1793 Half Cent (as depicted at the CoinFacts website) has chains of berries off the wreath. The picture is kind of crappy in the auction photo, but it looks like the reverse of a 1794 instead...in which case, wouldn't the head of Liberty be facing the opposite direction?? This is why I think it's an electrotype. I've seen electrotype 1793 Large Cents that have similar appearance... I almost bid on it but the auction got over $100 and out of hand.

    Best Regards,

    Leo

forget about raw-I can't believe someone would pony up that kind of cash with a photo that bad-and that is assuming it wasn't a private auction by one of the most infamous sellers on the web.

The picture is so poor, especially the one for the reverse, that I can't tell if the coin is genuine or not. There were two obverse dies and three reverse dies used to strike the 1793 half cents. By the photo I'm pretty sure that the obverse is Cohen #1. I believe that the reverse is Cohen letter A, but I'm not sure. That would make this piece or the host piece that was used to make it Cohen variety #1. All four of the 1793 half varieties are of similar rarities.

BTW, a decent electrotype would look much better than this. The edge on the real coin reads "TWO HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR." Most electros have a plain edge and a tell-tale seem running through it where the haves for joined together.

image At least it did to the high bidder! (note to newer members: a now-banned ebay seller from Savannah used to list repros as genuine coins and they usually sold for big money. The seller would always say "Looks all good to me" in the auction listings.)

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Hi Kranky,
Pam Donnelly is unfortunately no longer NARU'd on ebay-although she does not sell many coins these days. She leaves that to her accomplice estatedoctor
Genuine appearing trade from Irvin Clark, huh? No way THAT one could be a fake.

Here's one that I know is genuine because it's in my collection, and NGC said so too.

This one has nice color and surfaces, but it has rim nicks. I graded VF sharpness, net Fine-15. NGC called it VF-35.image
