This really )isses me off!!

How these auction sites who have this great internet presence can manufacture away defects that would otherwise make a coin very unappealing. I'm not just singling out this particular auction, I've had the misfortune of buying coins thru internet auction from other 'reputable' firms where marks, for some reason, did not show up on the coin they displayed. It really pushes me to understand that you have to have a coin in hand with good lighting or a good representative at an auction.

Current Heritage Auction, notice the absence of the spots before the neck and above the 1

Same coin, earlier auction, you'll have to sign in and enlarge the picture. Notice spots in front of neck and above the 1

I have paid for my education. The lesson learned is that I will never bid again without either seeing the coin in hand, or having a trusted friend and / or dealer view the coin for me.

Their pictures are so washed out anymore, it's hard to say what one might get when buying their coins. In this instance, this technique is definitely obscuring some odd toning on the coin.
