Best Coin/s in collection?

So, what is the best coin/s in your collection? I just received mine last night. My father has been dead now for a few years as he had a massive heart attack. Unknown to me, he had ordered proof and UNC sets from 1980 through 85. These were the basic sets, no commem included. My mother had mailed them to me. You know these sets are not top dollar sets. But, I will say that these things are why I collect. So, yes, Proof sets are very valuable.

Just bought my newborn daughter a 2006 $50 Gold Eagle NGC PR70 UCAM as an investment.
It is a very pretty coin, and more valuable than anything in my own collection.

I just sold my best coin last week. It was a 1928 St. Gaudens PCGS MS63. I know that it was a common date, but it was nice to me. I made a nice profit on it. I would have to say my best coin is my 1936 Texas PCGS MS66 Commem. I craked it out of a PCI MS65 holder. It has special meaning to me because I cherry picked it for pretty cheap. Its by far the pretiest coin ever minted.

kryptonitecomics, is that a New Haven Restrike? I love the color!

    BEST ... hmmm...

most expensive: my 1796 quarter. However it's AG at most, with lots of scratches and problems.

eye appeal: my MS64DMPL toned Morgan, but it's not worth much.

most sentimental value: my MS62 Barber half, which my grandfather carefully saved in a little box since 1915 and gave to me.

condition: any of my modern proof crap. Or some recent Denver mint Lincolns I pulled out of circ - quite startling how nice they are actually - almost prooflike mirror fields, and cameo heads. Denver seems to do a better job with business strikes than Philly.

But overall, I like my 96 small eagle dollar the best. That's why it's my icon! image

Come to think of it, I like every coin I own. To call one "best" would hurt all the others' feelings.

Many good coins have crossed my path. If best means most expensive then there is a tie for I have several that are priced about the same level. If best means one I appreciate most, it may be this one now:

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This would be my favorite coin, hands down...

purchased with proceeds from a land sale that my grandmother had left me.

Was in a 2nd generation PCGS holder when I took the photos... it's now in an XF-45 NGC holder.

ER, those have got to be some of the most stunningly beautiful coins ever. The artistry of the post-mint enhancements, the vivid colors of the paint on Lady Liberty... The tasteful, dignified portrait of our most intelligent president ever, with the words "In God We Trust" seemingly emanating from his mouth... And the vertical columns in the background vaguely evoking the Twin Towers...

Why, I don't know what to say. I'm feeling a little verklemmt. Discuss amongst yourselves...

    Gee, a handful of prooflike Morgans are my best: 1901 (PCGS 61DM), 1904 (PCGS 64DM), 1892-O (NGC 64DM), 1903-S (NGC 65PL), 1903-O (PCGS 66DM), 1882-O/S (NGC 60DM VAM-5EDS), 1887/6-O (ANACS 62PL), 1893-O (PCGS 62DM), 1894 (PCGS 62DM), 1896-O (PCGS 62PL), 1897-O (PCGS 63PL), 1900 (NGC 65DM), 1900-O (NGC 65DM), 1901-S (NGC 62DM), 1904-S (NGC 65PL), 1902 (PCGS 66PL), 1896-S (NGC 62PL), 1888-O (NGC 66DM VAM-9), 1878 (ANACS 60PL VAM-9), 1878 (PCGS 65DM VAM-41A), 1878 (NGC 65DM VAM-2), ....... What do I choose? The 1901 can't be beat as the only certified DMPL of the date (and likely only 1 of 2 extant). The 1892-O and 1900-O look like a branch mint proofs. Personal favorite has to be the 92-O.

Thanks for the compliment, Steve. I am nearing completion of the set with only a few difficult dates remaining (83-S, 93-S and 21-S). 89-CC isn't difficult, just expensive. My luck is that I'll finish right after the bull run dissipates and wait another 15-20 years to sell.

Coxe, Best of luck in finding the pieces that you need! I have the same problem with the 89 cc (expense) so I can finish my CC set and give you a run for second in the Ngc vam registryimage ( since Rob Joyce is so far ahead of us)image
