The first. It shows more of the details and scratches. They seem to get washed out in the second picture.
Philly QEs???? What is the world coming to?

One of the greatest sleepers in the coronet quarter eagle series is being taken off my website as I type. And it's a Philly coin. Amazing how nobody picked up on it.
Which one shows the color of the actual coin best?

These are two different coins.
Both are graded PCGS AU-58.
The second coin was the first gold coin I ever purchased (actually, my father purchased it for me). It was selected from a Stack's catalog with the following description: "AU satin-like". Of course there was no photo and the price was $175. I remember thinking that the grease spot above the head was a big scratch, and I was always a little disappointed with the coin.
Years later, when I got back into coins, I had the coin previewed by an ANACS grader. He told me that the coin had been cleaned (very light hairlines on the portrait), and they net-graded the coin XF-45. Later, I had a PCGS freebie to use, so I cracked the coin out of the ANACS holder and submitted the coin to PCGS, where it graded AU-58. I think that this grade is appropriate.
The second coin was purchased from CollectorCoins (Steve) from the BST. It has lovely reddish color (almost looks like a red IHC or Lincoln in color), and to the naked eye, none of the scritchiness is apparent.
That's bizzare. Look at the scratch on the shield on the reverse. Both are in the exact same spot.

RYK, before I read your response, I would've guessed the 2nd one was an AU-55/58, but had been dipped. The 1st one, is extremely nice... rich color and all that. I definitely dig the 1st one.
The overall color on the first one looks a little off on my screen. The bottom one is sharper, but I am not sure if it shows its color correctly. The pics are a lot better than I can do, though.
I would guess the first is MS61 and the second is MS62.
Why are you slumin' with quarter eagles? No one collects those.

I didn't realize this was an old thread. At least I am (somewhat) consistent with my grades.

They seem to show a lot of action in the fields and the first one on the face too.
I like gold, and QEs are a pretty cool denom, but ... just too many distractions.
One of these days.....
These coins seem difficult to find that is for sure.....

I'll guess AU 58 for each, although I would not be surprised if either was MS 61 or 62....
Edited to add: Great coins, too! Thanks for sharing...>Mike
Agree, and it also looks like my next icon.
Mgoodm3: I promised some pics of the shield. Looks like a die gouge/scratch.
You guys have discovered something. The 1890 MS-63 in the Heritage sale had the same die gouge.
