1907 $10 Pattern and reg. issue - side by side pics.

This is for the folks new to the $10 Indian series. For those unfamiliar with the difference between the 2 coins, here's a side by side comparison of the 1907 $10 wire rim "pattern" (left) and the regular issue. The wire rim is PCGS MS64, the other PCGS MS66. .

The Indians features, the stars, letters, eagle, log, leafs, etc are all different. The luster is different. The wire rim pattern has all the triangular "periods" around the lettering. See any other differences??

I'd never seen these two coins side-by-side before. Thanks VERY much for this comparison. The coin to the left--the wire rim?--seems more weakly struck than the coin to the right. But I thought to get a wire rim the coin had to be struck several times in order to force the rim upward around the dies. Is my understanding wrong? Regardless, this is a truly fascinating post!

Fabulous comparison. Great to see pics of these coins side-by-side in order to gain a sense of their vast differences. Thanks!

Nice comparison. Dots are the easiest to see. Everything looks heavier on the pattern.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
  • Numerals are smaller on the regular issue, no periods around motto on reverse, different star positions in relation to feathers in headdress, head and neck of eagle appear slightly different. Strike and lighting are different so some of this may be an illusion.
  • The arrows are also different on the reverse. They are longer on the right coin.

Agree the wire edge doesn't seem to be as fully struck but was that a design change rather than a weak strike?? Every wire edge I've seen (Heritage archives) looks like that, no matter the grade.

Any $10 experts want to chime in?? image

The Liberty from both the $10 and the $20 are taken from the statue of "Victory" in Saint-Gauden's Sherman Monument, which is in NYC right outside the Plaza Hotel (now Condos) Sadly, the statue, which is gilt (gold) is covered in bird poop! Maybe the ANS or someone can get NYC to clean it up!

On the left is by Saint-Gaudens / Henry Herring the one on the right is Charles Barber's interpretation.

This is Saint-Gauden's eagle design on President Theodore Roosevelt's Inauguration Medal.

Note the date; March 4, 1905. I believe this was the genesis of the Saint $10 reverse eagle.

Guess why President Roosevelt fell in love with the design??

I took this picture (greatly reduced here) at the Saint-Gauden's historic home in Cornish, New Hampshire.

I never realized how different those two were. Nice photo - makes it very easy to compare!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
