Saw this in the ANA website - they're proposing to create a new membership class for dealers - looks like the ANA has another bad idea up to bat - Proposal for Dealer Membership - and more unwanted numismatic elitism!

I cannot imagine that this meeting will produce a new class of membership. It is probably something that will be assigned to a committee for more discussion.
Of course, I could be wrong.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

If ANA dealers are held to a higher standard, perhaps it will negatively impact those who are out to scam collectors (the ones that sell whizzed AUs as BU by the boat load, etc.)
Given the lack of ethics that has been displayed by various ANA activities and decisions through the years, I hardly think that the organization is qualified to become a dealer-policing agency.
I belong to the ANA, but I’m not fan of the organization. The secrecy surrounding the booting of duly elected board member didn’t sit well with me. When an organization does something like that, the best thing to do is to explain it to the members publicly, not sweep it under the rug and threaten those with sanctions who might divulge the truth.
And, yes, years ago the ANA got into a bribery scandal with a major dealer. They did not look good at the end of that deal.
Nope the organization is not to be trusted. The magazine can be interesting at times, but beyond that, the ANA is not on my short list of favorite organizations.

Technically, they (ANA dealers) are already held to a higher standard. But from what I read, the ANA wants to create its version of the PNG - but the PNG's standards are so high that even if this new class passes, it won't work.
<< <i>Sounds like another revenue enhancement to me.

Let's put it this way.
In the past a few dealers have gotten the boot after they failed to reconcile a dispute with another ANA member. Then a few years later, they are right back in the organizations good graces with a membership number. Did the prostitute become a virgin again, or did the organization redefine virginity? From my perspective the business practices of the companies involved did not seem to change.

<< <i>Having the ANA policing anybody sounds about as effective as having Michael Jackson teaching fourth grade. >>

You mean like soliciting funds for the defense of ANA members embroiled in meritless lawsuits and then never disbursing any of the money collected to said members?

NO.
Did you bother to read the other things I had to say?
I didn't say that the ANA is wrong all the time. I only said that their past is checked enough to question their role of "laying on the hands" for dealers.

Sure I did. I was giving an example of the ANA saying one thing and doing another. Not quite what I'd seek in an organization bestowing their blessing on the dealer community.

Did I say you did? Are you saying the ANA handled the defense fund well?
