Should the US Mint to a tribute to the Bust design.

Would you be infavor of the mint doing a commemorative or a single year issue of the Capped Bust or Flowing hair bust design? The dies would have to be hand made... No AutoCAD programs no computers... Hand carved dies...

What do you think?

Terrible idea. Leave the past in the past.

Nope. Would be a bad idea I think. They would inevitably screw it up somehow.

No, what they ought to be doing is working on my $50 Buffalo!

Well, first thing would be that they'd have to squeeze "IGWT" on there somewhere. That alone makes it a screw up, and it's all downhill from there.

It would be different if the mint would do a nice job, but they suck...so...

    No.

The design was not that great. The obverse featured an overweight woman who grew less attractive as the series got into the 1830s. The reverse featured the "cheese board eagle" which was hardly inspiring.

It’s bad enough that we don’t have enough creativity to get beyond the generally excellent designs that were introduced from 1907 to 1921. Pulling up something that was mediocre from the 1800s hardly makes sense.

Not at all. I said putting IGWT on there makes it a screw-up -- just like it does for every other freakin' coin image .

Well, Guess I'm the odd duck then. I'm for it. Make a nice commem in DCAM if done right. Did an OK job with the Buff $ and brought back a few collectors also.

I think it would be nice for a commemorative, but it would have to be dated 2007. 1807 was the first year of issue, I think.

If you're in the market for a nice DCAM bustie there are those 2oz silver proof replicas available. They are in just about every early design you can think of.

Well the First Ladies series legislation providd that for those presidents who were not married while in office, the coin is to bear an image of Liberty as represented on the coins issued during his presidency. Well Jefferson was a widower and the coins during his term of office were the Draped Bust, Capped bust, and Turban head gold. So we have a 66% chance of one of our beloved Bust coins being used.
  • Yes I own a set of the 2 onces you speak of very nice if you ask me

Those are just a few from the set....

I would be all for a reissue or a commem, but it would not look the same

Tribute? No. Put it on the Cent, and leave it there for another 100 years.
  • The mint needs to figure out how to be original and creative at the same time. They need to find the next Augustus St Gaudens. Many of our coins lack character, these days.

This would not be the first time that have I differed from the concensus opinion of this forum, but I think that a 'tribute' or commemorative coin to the Bust design would be a great idea. I understand the negative comments regarding the overall poor quality of recent coin designs, but here we would have the design already established. As far as placing the mandatory "In God We Trust" on the coin, that would likely be on the reverse, with the Bust design on the obverse. I also agree with the dual dates, of 1807 - 2007. The real decision here would be to decide which of the Bust designs to use - Flowing Hair, Draped Bust or Capped Bust.

I freely admit that my own personal bias in favor of the Bust coinage is influencing my thinking here, but I have always loved our early Bust coinage, and would love to see it made more widely known to the general public. So put me down as an enthusiastic "Yes!".

I would suggest that an interesting tribute to the bust design might opt for the IGWT to be placed on the coin's edge.

Not only would they have to choose which major Bust design type but also the sub type. Take the Capped Bust half dolllars for example with the early, mid and late (Gobrecht) desings.

I like Barnogs idea of a lettered edge.

My main reason for not wanting the tribute is admittedly a selfish reason. I don't want to drum up new interest in my own area of collecting as the prices may well jump. Perhaps selfish but at least honest image

    No-not a trubute.
BUT, I think they should come up with new bust type designs for all circulating coins and get rid of coins with portraits of presidents.
