Are you a Numismatic snob?

This has less to do with the value of the coins you collect, but rather, your attitude toward the coins you don't collect and the people who collect them.

1. Do you denigrate the types/series of coins that you aren't interested in?

2. Do you have little to no respect for the accomplishments of those who collect the types/series of coins that you aren't interested in.

3. Do you have an us versus them attitude towards those who collect the types/series of coins that you aren't interested in.

If you answered yes to one or more, you're a coin snob! image

Man, I can't believe there isn't a ton of people agreeing they are snobs yet...

    Come on... be honest...

I for one, enjoy collecting Jeffersons... that turned into my niche because I could never afford collecting the quality of coins I like in other older series... I still love those coins, but just can't afford them.

There is a reason that I don't collect coins that are not in "My Collection". They are just beneath me. Man, I wish they have that nose-in-the-air emoticon.
  • Yes I am, especially a coin snob. All shiny disk collectors suck!

Nah, definitely not. That doesn't mean that I'll deal in them. I probably have done a deal or deals in just about anything you can think of over the years and I like some areas more than others of course, but I don't put anyone down for what they collect.

I'm really proud of some of the crap I collect. Who else has a collection of telephone tokens
or play money? I didn't even know what some of the junk was when the collections were be-
gun. Some turned out to be potentially desirable and rare like the charge tokens. Others
like the tool checks will forever remain ignored but they still make interesting collections.

People who ignore modern US coins are simply missing a bet.

...But I don't look down my nose at them. image

I have no problem with people that do not collect only silver coins minted between 1916 and 1964. Certainly its not my fault they are all screwed up. If they want junk its their problem.

Does this make me a Coin Snob ?

Then one day I met a snob. I ran home crying. When my mom said, "what's the matter, joe ? .... I said , "mom, today I met a snob and I tried to kill him with kindness but he wouldn't die".

The lesson was priceless. Love is a good thing. I don't see the coin snobs. I guess I'm protected.

    (I'm stuck on 1.)

I just like Lincolns, Lincoln varieties and Kennedy halves. Coins are coins no matter who they belong to. I won't be here forever and when I'm gone, someone else will be enjoying them. But while I'm here I'm going to have some great fun finding them. And all the better if I can help you find coins for your collection. If I could find you an 1801 HammerHead Washington Double-Dinger I would, but I wouldn't know one if I saw it. I do know a few things about variety cents and that's the best I can do even for myself. I applaud those of you who have taken your hobby to the heights beyong my reach. Naw, I'm no snob.

Heck no! Snobs are part of the reason it took me so long to get back into the hobby. I eventually learned how to deal with them (doesn't make matters any better being 20 years old) and brush them aside. Collect whatever makes you happy. Whether it be bargain bin coins only or coins that cost more than most people make in a year. It's all fine to me.

  • Way back in the mid 60's when I was a much younger rmoss, an old dealer told me that I couldn't collect everything. He said settle on one thing and do it well. Therefore I can't knock what anyone else collects.

    Edited to add:

    Two exceptions-
I just plain don't understand doll collectors and Beanie Babies.

Collect for the love of the hobby, the beauty of the coins, and enjoy the ride.

Yes, I'm now a coin snob. I happen to collect better grade circulated Barber coins, mostly raw, and try to avoid those who sell coins merely on the grades printed on the slab inserts. I enjoy talking with those who know how to grade, and respect those who can grade series I can't (like Buffalo Nickels or incuse $2.50 or $5 Indian gold).

I love coins. But I think of the 1969 Mad Magazine definition of a patriot who said (a few years before Archie Bunker) "I Love America, but it's going downhill because of all the negroes, Jews, Polacks, Atheists, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Arabs, Orientals, and commies who moved here." Mad Magazine's definition of an American patriot was someone like President Nixon, who loved America but hated 99% of the people who live here. (Does anyone remember David Frye, parodying Nixon, by saying "I love America, and you always hurt the one you love"?)

Yes I love coins, but refuse to buy 99% of what is offered. No offense intended to collectors of Frankies, Morgans, Saints, modern crap. or the coins I'll never be able to afford.

I can't stand those people who put together MS66 Saint Gauden sets or complete sets or early decimal coinage with gold in proof condition. Mainly because I cant afford to do such a thing. Actually, I truly respect everyone's collection. When I worked at a shop part-time and noticed people who would come in week after week buying small junkish type items, I would start talking to them and ask them what they were trying to accomplish. These are folks spending $15-$25 a week. Most of the time they didn't know why they were buying the junk they were. Mainly accumulating. I would then talk to them about certain series that coul easily be put together on their budget, books about each series etc. I guess I was snobbish about them accumulating but I was able to turn them all on to a series and I watched their collections grow. I ended up having a happier customer this way who ultimately spent more money on coins.

I am a major salmon snob though. I refuse to eat Atlantic salmon or any farm raised salmon. I also don't eat Pinks (aka Humpys) or Chum (aka Dog) salmon.
