I have zero interest in Liberty and Shield nickels, but I just bought the QDB book on them

Whitman has a good racket going. I like the books that QDB writes, and the collector in me wants to have the complete set of books in the Whitman Redbook series. I just literally got back from a walk to Barnes & Noble (I am in the nation's capital right now), and I had to buy this book. Like the Whitman Proof Set book that I bought, I probably won't break the binding on this book. At $17 a pop, the Whitman people should keep pumping out books so people like me keep buying, even if they have no interest. Has anyone read this book?

Sorry, I haven't read the book. I agree that a lot of collectors here unintentionally "collect" coin reference books, myself included. It's sort of like certain tools. You'll use it maybe a dozen times in your life (if that). But it feels secure knowing you have it. And hey, at $17-$20 a crack, that's not too bad.

You bought a book on them, so your interest is now much higher than zero.image

Amazon says they shipped my Nickel book. I love the "Red Book" series -- I hope they eventually cover every series of US coins. Content-wise, they fit nicely in between the Red Book and the various specialized books. They're a great read, even if you don't collect that particular series.

I collected Shield nickel die varieties many years back. I see not a few other folks have taken them up and that specializtion really has taken off. They are a lot of fun and quite interesting to cherrypick. You truly never know what you'll find next or where. The really great thing about collecting them by variety is that many of the great ones are extant largely in lower circulated grades making the hobby approachable an affordable to most collectors.

Lets see I have the Morgan book and I have 7 of those coins.....

I have the Double Eagle book and I have 2 of those, have the Type book and have 1/2 of that set.....

So I should probably get the proof set and this book as well.....

The books are all interesting reads, I have the red book currency book to for some reason, and I have never bought a note ever.....

  • I like Liberty nickels and even Shield nickels, especially if they are proof... But I don't have the book. Does that mean I bought the coin before the book?

I think the book is a great read, because QDB goes into tons of background historical information that isn't covered in any other book.

But I may be biased - I was a major contributor to the shield nickel variety section. Didn't contribute to the historical stuff though.

I've read it. image It's an excellent book. I love how QDB goes into detail on the history of both the nickels and the times in which they were brought into concept and circulation. The very best and most extensive historical treatment of the two series. Superb read that I recommend to anyone.

When I heard Howard was a major contributor to the Shield Nickel book, I immediately ordered the book.image Actually, I ordered it weeks ago.

We are lucky to have Howard on CU as a Shield Nickel expert.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • I'm intrigued. I reckon that's another book I need to look for. Lately, I seem to be spending much more of my very limited budget on books than on coins.

Yep. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that there's nothing like it, anywhere. image
My coins can beat up your coins.
