Name a series you might be interested in, can complete in your lifetime, but...

will not complete it, just because one, or two, within the series, is outrageously/ridiculously high priced (due to hype).
For me, I like the Morgan proof series but will never complete it, if I ever decide to start, just because I will refuse to pay for the unreasonably high priced 1895. I'd probably substitute it with the business 1895-S.

Liberty seated halves-need only the 1878-S (25000 in g) no way
Standing liberty quarters-need the 1916(these are not as rare as they are hyped up to be- a few years ago they were around $2000 in VF now over $9000-10000= forget it) and 1918/7-S.

Almost every classic series has a stopper that makes it almost impossible unless you're willing to spend $6,000 on a well worn hideous example that looks like someone pulled it out of a whale's stomach.

Liberty head nickels, for example... that 1913 is a toughie.

Barber quarters come instantly to mind. The money paid for the 01-S just seems stupid to me.

i find that the above is a poor poor reason not to collect
    a series.

my example is of course the basic liberty half eagle set. 1839-1908.

sure, there are a handful of stoppers. 54S 64S 75P and the one
or two from each branch mint.

but with 203 coins in the series, you have a long term goal that
will dazzle the ordinary person when 75% completed.

even a coin collector would stop to take a peek at so many
different dates/mints on one table without the BIG ONES. image

Nobody ever said not to collect a series. The statement was "...will not complete..."image

but i thought that you implied.. image doh. i got it now.
i thought this was a post about why or why not to collect
a series because a normal person can complete it.

    ah, i need coffee.

Barber Quarters popped in my mind immediately, I am currently working on a VG-8/10 set trying to get them.....

I will not have the 1901-S ever likely image

The 1913-S & 1896-S are questionable if I will ever have those..... They would be slabbed if they where so they would not be in my dansco album either.....

Barber Quarters might be the best example of any set bar gold ones out there.....

I say that because other sets like the seated coins are collected by the insane only.....

A few series of coins come to mind that are nearly impossible to complete in my lifetime. The Seated Half Dollars with the Ultra Rare 1853-O No Arrows and Rays ( the 1878-S is also a show stopper ) has to be the toughest series. Other series, such as the Liberty Head "V" Nickels, Barber Dimes, and St Gaudens Double Eagles, all contain Fantasy Pieces and should be rated as "NC" - non collectible.

Yes, the Barber Quarters have three key dates, two of which are available for a price occasionally, but as everone knows, a decent mid range 1901-S just isn't out there. Jim Dimmick has a great looking 1901-S in PCGS VF 20 ( or 25, I can't remember ) and its one coin he refuses to sell. I can't blame him.

My signiture line says it all....

I would not include the fantasy piece in those sets so.....

If and when I collect the Barber Dimes, working on the Halves and Quarters so that is enough punishment for a while.....

1902-O quarter, I picked on up saturday of course it is a nice VG coin only.....

Seated Quarters. Once I get every one, except the 1873-CC, sans arrows, I will consider it complete. But, I technically will not have a complete set.

    Early half dimes.

I love 'em, but I'll never get a complete Red Book variety set because of the 1802. I aspire to get a decent 1796. I have one now, but it won't grade. image

I suspect that I will never complete my year run of half dollars (or for that matter even the type set.image) The small eagle reverse from 1796 -97 is, I think, WAY out of line price-wise. Are they rare? Yes, well under 200 known examples (TOTAL population--not just slabbed) for either date...but still, 5 figures for a problem AG?

I would love to put together a matched set of Barber Quarters in XF45. The 01-S would probably run in excess of $30K, the 96-S over $5K and the 13-S over $8K. Those three coins alone are worth more then my XF45 Barber Half set. The Barber Dime set I might do in XF45 as the only killer is the 95-O and I'm guessing that will be a $5K coin.

I would love to do Quarte Eagles but it isn't going to happen.

A set of Indian Quarter eagles is still possible in EF-AU condition if you can put together the few grand for the 1911-D. Here's my set.

The Liberty Head series is impossilbe. Too many rarities.

I would love to do Barber Quarters after my Barber Dimes and Barber Halves.

But the 1901-S in AU is listed at $27,000. Ouch! No way!! image
