Honestly, how long can you go between purchases?

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭

Assume you have the money and time to shop. How much "will-power" do you have?

Not a lot!! I'm having buy withdrawals now! It's seems like a month is a year when I haven't bought anything!!

I'm getting more restrained as time goes on... I'd like to think that more and more I can wait between purchases.

That said, I only got four coins in three days at FUN, while at a regional Boston show a few weeks ago I got at least half a dozen and spent much more. If the right coins are there, I buy.

Not a matter of self-discipline...instead it is a matter of availability of the right coin. Sometimes there are nice coins available a couple times in a week, sometimes it could be one in two months.

But self control does play a factor also. I'm getting better here also. I'm happy with a coin every month or so.image

Coincidentally, about as long as I go between paychecks. image

I'm getting to the point of 'the right coin' for my collection much easier. Unfortunatly two have gone by while waiting for a four figure refund from a board member. Stay tuned for that threadimage

About a month between purchases for me too. But each of my purchases will be two or more coins. I'm also counting a show as a single purchase for purposes of this thread. image

All I can say is, I'm not only addicted to the coins, but to the commerce side of it as well. I like action, things coming in and out, something better always on the horizon.

easily weeks at a time. sometimes a month. but a coin a month
    is about right. sometimes two.

over time this will slow down as holes get filled so to speak.

I'm currently going through my longest span without purchasing a coin ( a little over 2 months). I'm concentrating on early commems with nice color. Not for a lack of trying, but I have not been able to find anything that excites me. I'm starting to get the shakes.image

I am in no hurry to put my sets together. I have not acquired a coin in nearly 3 months. I hope to do some buying at the Atlanta ANA, but if I can't find any coins to fit the bill I will gladly come home empty handed. 2005 was a record buying year for me as I added 16 significant coins to my collection. My checkbook was a victum of the record setting activity. This year I will be happy if I acquire 8 significant coins. If more, then the merrier. The greatest lessen I've learned over the years is the lesson of patience.

I've got pretty good willpower, although it was not always so. These days, how long I go between purchases is more a function of coin availability than willpower...Mike

About as long as I can go without se.....nevermind!
  • I've bought 4 dimes in the space of two weeks, so the answer is...not long, but I'm making up for lost time. image

Patience is as important as money. Without, you'll never put together a quality collection.

With both money and time I wouldn't last a day (or whenever the eBay auction ends). If eBay isn't being cooperative I wouldn't be able to stay out of the coin shop I like.
