Who here is putting together 19th century year sets?

What is the story behind the year? Are there specific grades or a mix and match? Proof, business strike or both? Do they include all mint marks or just denominations?

I've put together an 1832 year set all from the Reiver collection. Grade is less important to me than the right look and an interesting coin with these. Right now they range from AG-XF. So far I've got 4 of the 6 non gold issues. The cent and half cent have eluded me but I'll get them sooner or later, no rush as the capped coins were the priority in the set. They are all Philly minted coins of course image

I'd like to include the 1832 Gold as well but it's just incredibly too price prohibitive for me.

As far as the story behind the year... As long as I can remember 32 has been my lucky/favorite number. No reason for it, I don't even remember what made me think this originally, no matter though. 32 isn't as numismatically comples as 72 but it's pretty darn fun. Some would say I'm obsessed with 1832. I may tend to agree. image

Talk about an obsession with 1832 ! You could read about it on my description in the Bust Quarters on the PCGS Registry.

Regarding 19th C. Mint & Proof Sets, my two favorite years are 1889 and 1898. ( The years my grandparents were born ). Currently, 1889 Proof and Mint Sets are not listed on the PCGS Registry; so, nothing is currently listed. The NGC Registry does accommodate 1889 and my sets are listed there.

I just started the 1898 Mint Set with the addition of a Phila. Half Dollar in MS 64. The Proof set for 1898 is missing the Morgan Dollar however, that set is available for viewing on the PCGS Registry.

I"m putting together a mint set from 1861. A common year so the coins are more available, generally. It will take a life time to do it. It is a very historical time in U.S. history.

I happen to like 1838, 1855, and 1867, so when I get a chance at a type coin from one of those years I'll choose it.

edited to add: the one 19th century year set have completed is the very tough and great historic year of 1812, only 3 denominations but all are challenging in high grade, the half dollar is by far the easiest coin of the year to find nice.

  • I'm doing coinage for 1841 within my 7070 type album (thankfully there is no half cent spot for an 1840-49). So far I've got the dime, half and dollar. 1841?--- a 100 years before I was born.

  • I'm working on 1842, 100 yrs. prior to my arrival, and 1878. The 1878 struck me when I was into Morgans heavily, due to all the varieties. I will never complete either set, but it is fun and that is why we all do it, right?image

I am doing 1866 and 1876 including the gold.

1866 is the motto change year, plus lots of variety of coins. Also the 1866 was the first true rare coin I ever bought. Have the 1866 set over half done.

1876 the 100 year set. Always like this set becuase its the centennial. Many nice coins, and rare ones. The smaller gold has very low mintages for the most part. I am only 13% complete on this one.

Both are listed on ngc's site. All though not all the coins in the 1866 are listed. Some are in for cross, or waiting to be submitted. I hope to finish this set with in the next 5 years. Then focus on the 1876. After that who knows maybe 1857 because of the wide selection of copper, half cents, large cents, small cents.

It is great fun, but also very expensive.

I always liked my 1816 set, myself. The set all has one grade, one look, and is from only one mint. image
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    An 1816 Large cent---what I'd call a doable set!!!

    Now, that IS weird!
I'm looking to do the same thing for 1868 (that isn't the weird part....the following is....) and my kid will also be 66 years old when the set would be 200 years old!

Trouble is, seems that 1868 is a semi-key for a few coins image

I was doing 1858-0 and 1867-s silver year sets in Choice/gem UNC
about 15-20 years ago. Completed the 58-0 set but was unhappy that I couldn't find gems of the "common half dime and half." Hint...they weren't so common in gem.

The 1867-s had the most underrated coins for the money imo back at that time. The half dime was the easiest and in gem that is a semi-stopper as well. Never did find a dime or half to my liking and so never completed that set. Gave up before Eliasberg broke . The was the first decent half that popped in 10 years of looking.

No sets currently but wouldn't mind doing an 1857-0 set. Unfortunately I doubt I could ever find a 25c or 50c that I would like.
