I would guess less than 5%

  • Almost all of them.
  • One. I've made a deal for a Mercury dime with a forum member (who shall remain nameless, in case he doesn't want to be revealed). The coin is a 1937 PCGS MS-66. Not in hand, yet.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

    Too many!

I met board member, "Dahlonega" through this forum. Through him, I purchased my first Dahlonega coin and got hooked. You can therefore credit (or blame) him directly or indirectly for the 25 or so Dahlonega coins that I own. I have also purchased quite a few expensive and inexpensive type coins as a result of interactions with board members.

  • If it wasn't for this forum may not have discovered VAMSimage so my collection would be greatly reduced! Also due to this forum found the dealer to upgrade my CC collection so I have to say that all my coins are due to this forumimage

    2 this weekend.

I do not keep track but many coins have been purchased from members and sold to members.

If you are talking about only the coin forum the answer is zippo. Mine have came from the registry and buy, sell trade forums.

Most....that aren't Morgans (got those from K6AZ before all the poking here that helped push him over the edge and get him booted) and aren't "new and from the US Mint". I would have gotten all but one or two of the US Mint sets anyway.

The 1955 DDO Lincoln, the toned IHCs (Proof and MS), the birth year set for myself and the registry sets for my son and I.....those are all because of being on the forum.

Thousands of dollars later, I have a SDB and some picture of coins to show for it image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I would say 10% of my coins have come from folks I've met here on these boards.

Everything not purchased from the Mint directly, or from my childhood collection.

I kept my ANA membership and CW subscription for many years and didn't buy a single coin or go to a show. When I found this message board, I got to know some people, learned a lot more, and gained enough confidence to dive back in.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I haven't actually bought any Kennedys from Russ but it's his fault that I started a registry set of Kennedy proofs and I'm only 5 away from a complete set. I also have about 10 of my better coins in my Dansco 7070 album from members of this forum and another dozen or so from Boom's swaps that I've participated in.

Directly or indirectly, a good many -- maybe 25% or something like that. Notably, something more like 2/3 of my best "stuff" had something to do with the forum and its members.

Wow, I've gotten a lot of coins from board members now that I think about it, I'll name a few and sorry if I left any out, feel free to remind me, from LordM I got an 1861 half dime, from MgoodM I got an 1845 half dime, from CoinLt I got an 1821 quarter, from Russ I got an 1864 2 center and others, from Darin5 I got a 1938D dime, from TomB I got an 1802 half dollar, from several members Ive traded my junk silver washies for their state quarters, thanks again guys, almost time to do it again, tough to get the Phillies here on the left coast and I refuse to pay more than face value for a state quarter so I kind of cheat by offering '64s.

Probably a dozen or so, maybe a few more than that.

A couple of memorable and recent ones - a colorful 1884 Liberty Nickel from mgoodm3 (BST post) - still have it, still love it

and a nice 1897 Liberty Nickel from CarlWohlforth, who's site I would have never found probably if it were not for this board

Also, a great package of Jeffersons from Keets and a few nice coins from Astrorat and Rwill

    I'm probably missing someone

    About 1/3.

I've gotten some very nice large cents from forum members.

I've also met a more traditional dealer who has gotten me many of my finest coins.

Many other purchases have been discussed publically on threads or PMs with several of my forum friends.

With the lessons learned here, my collection has grown in size and quality. image

    Take care...Mike

That's an interesting topic! I'm not sure but I'd say only a couple. However I have bought quite a few from really nice board members off of eBay, only I found the coins on eBay, not here.

None as of right now. That will likely change this week.
  • Exactly 34 coinsimage This forum inspired me to do the 7070 album and I have purchased 34 coins specifically for that album.

This is a very small portion of my entire collection but represents some of the nicest coins I own except for my Morgans.

I got one on a back door offer from this forum. Now over on the PCGS forum I got about five or six. And then about a dozen on the BST forum, and probably twenty from the BST spams for eBay.
I will add that I forgot the members web sites I learned about here another forty or so from them.
  • airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,207 ✭✭✭✭✭
Quite a lot... I don't have a breakdown, but a huge number have been off the BST, from members I've met in person (and most likely sought out to get a better look at inventory), or from eBay auctions where I've known the board member).

At the least, it amounts to many thousands of dollars.

I met one of my favorite dealers here about five years ago. Since then I have purchased many coins here, as well as sold some. I would say around 30, but that's a guess. I just bought 8 coins from a member today at a local show!
