Grades back... Another $5 Indian goes from a PCGS MS62 holder to a PCGS AU55 holder...

It's only 7 points... image I won't even start in on the "overpaid graders" about the $10 Indians that went from MS61/62 to AU58. I thought these guys were supposed to be "the best"... image

  • I feel your pain. I never break gold coins out of PCGS holders and send them back to PCGS anymore. Never! On the other hand, early NGC holders can be a treasure trove if you know how to grade gold and look at them in person before buying. JMHO.
In an insane society, a sane person will appear to be insane.
  • It's especially difficult with tougher dates. The PCGS graders don't have the ba$$s to assign the correct grade. They just take the easy way out with the AU58 "tool"... IMO.

i also think that cracking out gold coins right now and sending
back to PCGS will result in lower grades for many coins.

ms60-62 became a real playground for AU sliders.

If you know they don't get it right, stop cracking out and submitting. It is your own paranoia that's killing you, thinking they are going to be biased by the slab.

Dizzy Foxx! If the collector looked through the glasses the way they should be worn, wouldn't the images be flip-flopped?

You obviously missed my point, which had to do with the lack of consistency.

something wrong with the old holder?

  • No matter what the consistency is, wouldn't it be best to go through a regrade and not have to take the beating? image

Just an observation...when collectors get upgrades they always take the credit for their keen eye, but downgrades are always the TPGs fault.

PCGS is very inconsistent. Your experience is no surprise to me. My suggestion is if you are going to play the crack-out game, you have to play it to the end. Keep submitting until you get the grade you want.

I actually waited a few days before posting this and didn't really want to. It just surprises me how incosistent the TPGs can be... Oh, well...

    techeff,

you did play the game to the max by cracking out the coins.
quite risky from what i have heard about PCGS now days.

also 291fifth, may very well call the coin AU50-55 because
he remembers the "good old days" when grading was tough.

In my mind the scale was warped. coins that are au55 should
    be xf45.

    60-62 should be PQ AU58s..

somewhere along the line it became warped and PCGS is trying
    to revert it.

prices in their guide for ms60-62 half eagles have dropped like
a rock. the market is telling us something. don't try it anymore.

try the reverse.. newly graded 10s in ms63-64 darn well better
    be flawless.
