The date is there. It's either an 1892 or an 1892.

If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

I wonder in the life of that coin, how many people looked at it and thought, this doesn't look like a regular half dollar, but because of it's advanced stated of wear decided to just toss it back into circulation?

That would be a cool story to know.

My guess, P-01, I am suprised that there is any vestige of a date left.

There's a bit of an interesting story to this one. I purchased it back in the early 80's. It was problem free, damage free and if you squinted and looked really hard you could make out a ghost of a 3 exactly where the 3 in the date (1893) would be. There is a bit of lettering on the reverse at the 12:00 that helped to line up the coin.

I sent it into PCI (PCI had a pretty good reputation back then and were patient enough to read a note that was attached with a coin). They sent it back unholdered as they were unable to determine a date.
I placed the coin securely in a flip and then circled over the plastic with a black magic marker the ghost of the 3. PCI received it back and this time they did holder it. Here's the result:

The Columbian half circulated, some heavily.
I would challenge though anyone to find one of these in a lower state of preservation that is also problem free. I've seen the one that was PCGS PO01 and it had more detail both obverse and reverse.
Edited to add: I don't think finding one with more wear can be done!
  • I bet ya coulda got a better grade had you sentit to NGCimage
UCSB Electrical Engineering....... USCG and NASA

  • I think they overgraded the coin.

Registry? There is a heavy hitter that came along and dominated the low grade problem free PCGS early Commemorative Registry.
