Do you like the PCGS holder?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Many folks are complaining about the new ANACS holder - the label's ugly, it's too easy to crack, etc.

Speaking of too easy to crack, is the PCGS holder too hard to crack?
Considering the inconsistency of their grading and how their coins are always being cracked out and resubmitted, should it be easier? Is someone going to lose an eye one day from a flying plastic shard?

I don't know about the news ANACS holders as I don't own any yet, but both the old ANACS and NGC holders are very easy to crack down the seam, or close to it, without plastic flying everywhere. Is that the way it should be?

I like the holder the best of all. It is sleek, it stacks, and the insert is far less obtrusive than those of its main competitor.

Should there be a warning label on the slabs?

It's all fun and games til someone loses and eye.

  • I think they should have zippers.
    Curmudgeon in waiting!
  • No I don't. The only holder I like is SEGS.

The current PCGS holder is great. I like the design & style of it. It's not a distracting type of holder. IMO.

PCGS and NGC holders are larger than necessary. I prefer the old ANACS holders.

my postman dropped one of my packages on the road and ran over it with the jeep...broke the slab cleanly in half!

so they aren't too hard to crack out!

inconvienent though....now when i want to crack one out ...i need a postal jeep.image
  • ....I lke SEGS holders, untill I have to crack one. IMO they are the hardest of all to crack out..........

  • I certainly like the PCGS holder over NGC because NGC hides the edge.
I want to inspect that part just like the rest of the coin.

After my last submission to NGC I doubt I will ever submit a coin to them again.

  • I hate NGC holders. Recently, I cracked out a 1900 O morgan, and did it so flawlessly and perfectly, that I stuck a horrid AG 1900 O in the slab and pressed it back together. As long as it wasn't handled roughly, I was able to convince 2 dealers that's the way it came, because of the lack of damage to the slab. One dealer dropped it, and it "popped" open a little. If someone were so inclined, they could do all kinds of bad bad things with NGC slabs and rip people off.

PCGS is ok, but SEGS is the best slab in the biz (If only it were as small as the old ANACS holder).

A crystal clear insert-sort of like the real old holders but not rigid-would look good. Makes the coin look like it's floating in mid-air. Otherwise I like the holder-only SEGS has a better one.

The limiting factor on holder size is the $50 PanPacs -- PCGS and NGC holders are just big enough to holder those monsters. Old-skool ANACS holders are too small for them.

Not that that is much of an issue for me, however...

As far as the PCGS holder itself, I like the holder, but (as usual) I hate the label. Times New Roman Bold has got to be one of the ugliest fonts ever created. The only way it could be worse would be if they replaced it with Comic Sans.

    I do.

  • PCGS has the best holder on the market. My opinion factors in plastic quality, aesthetic design, label format, stacking and storage. Overall, it is just the most professional looking holder on the market. Not that I am a fan of slabs, but if I had to chose one, it would be PCGS.

You can all start your laughing once I hit the post button. I actually kind of like *cough*ACG*cough**cough* holders because they are relatively small when compared to NGC and PCGS. A lot of people have commented how they like the smaller holders. Also, just about everybody poo poo's ACG, so if you concentrate on the coin and not the holder, you can often get some decent deals because many people won't give ACG the time of day. I only have a handful of those holders, but I'm happy with every coin within them. Their grading does not seem totally out of whack. I've seen more discrepancies in coins slabbed by ANACS. ACG slabs stack on to PCGS slabs fairly nicely too; they fit right in the middle of the PCGS raised rim. Not much of a selling point but it's a reality. My most recent PCGS purchase I'm rather disappointed with. I think he coin is over graded by a solid point....

But yes, I do like the PCGS slabs, to answer the question. I'm starting to like NGC better though. If I'm planning on popping the coin out, and the coin I want is available in the new ANACS holders, I'll buy that one because I can sneeze on it and break it open.

I do like the old anacs holders best, like many others. I have a fascination with old holders in general. The pcgs holder is fine, but there's something about all of the angles that I don't really like....

Are you not aware of the whole ACG unpleasantness of the past few years? The Hagars named me in their lawsuits, and cost me thousands of dollars in legal fees. I want nothing to do with any of their products and services.

I like the small ANACS holders the best, I think SEGS has the second best. The PCGS slab is fine, easy to view and a clean insert.
