Dasco 7070 and 1832 Capped Bust

I just purchased a 1832 Lettered Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar for a reasonable price. I when to place it in my Dansco 7070 and it will not fit in the pre-punched hole. After closer examination and comparing the Bust Half to other half dollars, the Bust Half is considereably larger than other half dollars. Are Bust Half Dollars larger than later half dollars? I hope so they are.

Yes, the bust halves are larger, but the hole for that half should fit the coin if you are putting it in the right space.

Im putting it in the right place, there is no doubt. Still wont fit. The hole appears to be the same size as all the holes for the other half dollars.

If you have an old AG or G example of the coin, push it in and out of the opening several times. It should widen it enough for the newp to fit. I had that problem with one of the bust halves and a few of the half dimes.

  • Yes--bust halves through 1836 are 32.5mm. Later halves, seated, Barber, Walkers, etc. are 30.6mm. The opening in the 7070 is sized appropriately for the Capped Bust.

As Billboat said bust halves should be 32.5 mm, but they can be oversized, I believe mostly in the early dates. I have three examples 1807 O.109a draped bust halves that are all 34 mm.

I've yet to hear of an oversized 1832, very interesting. Please measure the coin and get back to us?

Bummer! I was hoping this would be something to do with the coin image

Try some sandpaper on the inside of the hole and maybe you can widen it?

That hole is too small, my hole for the Barber half is too big. Every time I open the Dansco that stupid Barber is flipped upside down or rotated.

You can use a small strip of cardboard between the coin and the hole when the coin is smaller than the hole. Works good.

My hole for the Barber half has the same problem. Its alsways siting in there sideways.
