Most underated 1980's set

I would like to nominate one as far as visual appeal goes. This set really has no rookies of note in it, but I think this set is absolutely beautiful. Is anybody with me in liking the looks of the 1988 Fleer set? I was going through some sets, and ran across this one. It only books for like $8.00, and really doesn't have any valuable cards, but I think this set is really nice looking. Also, is it just me, or is this set a little more scarce than some of the other late 80's (and I use the term "scarce" very loosely)? I just know that when going through commons, wheter it be my own, or others, that I hardly ever see 1988 Fleer.

Go ahead and laugh and make fun or whatever, but I really like the looks of that set. What are some more underated sets?

Actually I completely agree with you. In terms of what was available in '88, I too feel the fleer was the best set. I really like the all-white borders, and most of the shots are nice. I've contemplated starting to build this set (using all PSA 9's and 10's) but just haven't bitten the bullet. Mark Grace, Edgar Martinez, and Tom Glavine are about the only RC's worth a darn but SO WHAT!

I liked it when it came out and still like it. (I also hoarded a number of Mark Grace rookies. He having a single card in the update set was cool too. And I'm sure onefasttalon STILL hoards the update Sabo card. image) I've heard some people throughout the years say they thought the set was ugly or boring but I think it fit well with Fleer's 1980s style of simplicity.

Sorry to say I am not a big fan of that one, looks like a candy cane to me.

  • Close. I think 1989 Fleer is one of the best looking of the decade. Plus you get Griffey, Johnson and Sheffield.

I like the '88 Donruss set. Just picked up a factory set for under $10.

Scan from PSA Set Registry (not my set)....

I agree ! The 88 Fleer set is one of the best looking sets of the 80's. I bought this set in 88 and put it in pages then, it has been in pages ever since in the bottom of my closet, It isnt even in a binder. I love the white background/border on these cards. If you see it in pages it is even better looking.

I remember when those came out, every card is an action shot, thought that was very cool. Remember too that they had some problems with initial production, had a bad cutting blades and most of the cards had extra piece on the corners.

I like the 1988 Fleer set too. Upon my return to the hobby in the late 90s, the 88 fleer set was the first one I wanted to complete.

I remember that set being really popular in the late 80s and early 90s as there were a bunch of stars from that era with their rookies in that set. I wonder how that set will do if Edgar Martinez makes it into the Hall.

Well... neither. I know it's not the Holiday set (that one is worth a lot more) but it's not in a simple brown box either. It's in a white box with Topps factory stamping all over it. Check it out HERE

Wow, I didnt even know they were putting em in those boxes back then, I may have to keep watch.

I didnt think it would be possible to spend too much $$ on 86 topps but I have been doing my best to try lately. Ive busted 5 of the 6 box rack cases in the past few months trying to put together a PERFECT set. So far, that is nearly 35,000 cards and I have roughly 200 that are true beauties. Perfect tiffany finish, zero chipping, no print flaws whatsoever, dead on centering ( I actually dont mind the TB centering to be a bit off favoring the top since it just allows more black).....just a truly amazing set when they are on. If anyone would like a team set from 86 I will put together one for them shipped for $5. I will do my best to find you really nice cards when assembling...they will all be at least PSA 8 quality since they are all fresh from rack boxes, and I toss anything that is way oc, chipped or dinged. PM me and let me know if there is any interest.

I think the 83 Topps is underated. Great looking set, and three nice rookie cards of Boggs, Gwynn, and Sandberg, which I think is a classic. And some of the old timers like Bench, Rose, Yaz, Carew, and Seaver were still around.
  • I loved the '88 Fleer set! My favorite from '88. I remember that time well, wanting to pull Matt nokes, Gregg Jeffries, Kevin Seitzer, Mark Grace, Benito Santiago, and of course all the superstars of the time. Yo Redheart.... why? ... well, because I started to idolize him back in 1988, and haven't stopped picking up his card ever since. They're dirt cheap (free most of the time.) I don't always think this hobby has to be about collecting what's the most valuable. I bet there are millions of folks out that collecting their favorite players back in the day... whether that was 1955, 1988, or 2005! Don't get me wrong, have a VERY large collection of graded super-star RC's and HOF'ers too, but my true obsession is collecting my childhood hero.

Tennessee... they all look great, either email me or PM me what you have to have for them. Thanks Again!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

Seems like baseball covered, so as far as football goes...

1984 Topps USFL - Contains 3 key HOF RCs of Steve Young, Reggie White and Jim Kelly. I can only imagine if these 3 were included in the '84 Topps NFL issue? There are also other Heisman RCs contained in the set (Walker, Rozier). Plagued with centering issues and very condition sensitive (due to poor packaging). Set prices have been very solid lately.

1985 Topps - Black bordered set ... currently contains 34 HOF'ers (2 HOF RCs Moon, Munchak). Long term HOF RC prospects in Richard Dent, Henry Ellard, Irving Fryar and Mark Clayton. Unopened material has been steadily increasing in the last 6 months - rack pack boxes are highly sought after.

1986 Topps - Green bordered set - not as difficult as ‘85, but still very challenging. Nice selection of HOF'ers and contains RCs of Jerry Rice, Bruce Smith and Andre Reed. Also, NFL RCs of Steve Young and Reggie White. Pricey unopened material drives some set collectors away.

<< <i>With out a doubt great looking cards however I have to give the edge to 84 Donruss followed by 85D and 86 D. >>

I think '84 and '85 Donruss get the lion's share of attention for Donruss sets from the 80s, so I don't think they fit as underrated. They are beautiful cards.

The 87 fleer is a nice looking set also, another set in pages collecting dust at the bottom of my closet. The blue/white borders of the 87 fleer always made me think of the sky and clouds. probably one of the best looking borders of all time!

I'm kinda biased, but the '84 Donruss set is my favorite of the 80's as far as baseball goes. Football? Gotta go with the '85 Topps Football (love them black borders!).

Steve Hart has a couple of these cases on his web site. I don't know why he has them priced at $100 apart though.

I've long loved the 84 fleer set.

Clean borders, interesting concepts on the 2 cards joining to make one big one, etc.

  • Some people may want to kill me for stating this, but the one set that I will nominate is:

    The 1987 Topps Baseball Set

The set has great action shots, and I personally like the borders. Perhaps, it also has to do with the fact that it was the first set I can remember collecting.

I think I will now purchase one.

    Good topic.
