Grade my 1873-S Seated 10c - New info. added

It's not slabbed; I'm just looking for opinions on grade and originality. I'll add my 2 cents worth tomorrow. If anyone else has an 1873-S dime they'd like to post, show it off here.

AU-50. It has the look of an XF-40/45 at first, but I think this date is typically softly struck.

    Xf-45+

I like it , neat date not frequently seen around here

AU-50 on a good day, but more conservatively EF-45. Tough and underrated date in this condition!

It looks very nice to me. I'd have to go with AU-55.

AU50, taking into account the ding on the right knee.
  • I know nothing about the series so can't say too much but it looks like a 45+ coin from the details. Is there a missing bottom left serif on the first A in America? Or is it just my old eyes?

I grade it XF 45+. The coin looks too white to be undipped, but I see nothing that would keep it out of NGC or PCGS plastic. I've yet to pick up the with arrows seated dime, but when I do, I can only hope to get an equally as nice example. Thanks for sharing...Mike

I see AU53. If I'm reading your picture right, the luster is nearly uninterrupted. The strike is soft; by wear alone it could go 55, but the big whack on the knee & the one across the D in DIME don't help it.

It looks reasonably original to me.

    Neat coin.

XF+. Nice repunched 1 in the date. Half dime 1 was punched first and corrected with the dime punch. You can see the base of the first punch just above the base on both sides.

I bought this coin online (raw) from a photo that was not as clear as the one I provided here. I paid a strong EF-40 price for it - just about exactly the EF-40 price in the PCGS price guide. After getting it, I inspected it in my office under fluorescent lights and then emailed the dealer to tell him how wonderfully original it was, and how I was happy with it. When I got it home, I was stapling it into a new 2 x 2 under my desk lamp, and I caught the dreaded glint of underlying hairlines. That's right- it was wiped, clean across the coin, on both sides. You'd never be able to see it from a picture, and most would miss it under the lights at a coin show. However, it's got hairlines that are plainly visible under an ordinary desk lamp, and it will never holder at either PCGS or NGC. At least it is not AT on top of that. If this doesn't make one paranoid about buying raw coins from photos online, I don't know what would. It's still a nice coin, and I got a fair price given that it is really EF-45 to AU-50 for detail, but I have to wonder if that dealer was snickering when he read my email about its glorious originality.
  • Not that it's news to anyone --- never trust flourescent lighting when buying---at shows I like to buy from guys that have incandescent or halogen as supplements to the over heads. At my favorite dealer I always take a coin to the window or doorway to check it. About a month ago ago I was going to buy a barber quarter to upgrade my type set---beautiful under the regular shop lights--full of hairlines in daylight.

Don't bet it wouldn't. If it looks reasonably good (which it obviously does) it very well might slab. That doesn't change the fact that the hairlines are there & that they are annoying, but plenty of coins like that inhabit top TPG holders. It wasn't cleaned harshly enough to strip the luster; it might get by.
