How many of you are contemplating a move to the darkside?

With prices for nice US now out-of-sight for many, perhaps it is time to look at the darkside and its interesting and reasonably priced material more closely.

I never understood the term darkside--I hope it's not dirty!

I'd like one of each silver 1 oz bullion coin from as many countries as I can collect, just for kicks and the fun of building the set.

Ancients are fun to collect - but I'm waiting until the TPG's are more accepted there.

I used to be closed minded and swore I'd never collect DS coins but I found many to be so beautiful that I just couldn't resist.

  • I've always loved the dark side, particularly ancients and Central-South American silver coinage. And don't even get me started on the artistry of 19th and early 20th century German, Austrian and central european coinage. Once I finish my US type set, Bust Halves and CC Morgan set I may get serious with the dark side.

I started this process over a year and half ago due to the prices of lightside stuff!

I would quit coin collecting before it came to that.

    Already did it! image

I started with an ancient Greek tetradrachm or two, then Mexico "Caballito" pesos, then 17th century European talers, and then 16th century Scottish coins.

    They are FUN!
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I've picked up a couple of weenie coin sets but I would'nt move strictly to darkside material.

I have absolutely no interest in foreign coins.

    I don't think so.

  • I moved about a year ago. Frankly some of the gold is just as historical as US coins (nd it circulated here), and just as attractive.. I'm even doing a South American series for a denomination, buying off ebay!

Yes. And never say never. But I'm glad some of you do. It makes it a lot easier
for me to acquire some of the beautifully toned darkside coins that are out there.

I have almost always collected darkside coins, mostly Canadian, along with my US coins.

It is always good to do so for a change of pace open your mind and gain new perspectives.

Here is a great example of the blending of US patterns, "moderns" and darksider coins:
Hey, that is a Columbian two centavo coin design!

This is a US pattern Judd-2060. This is what Q David Bowers said about this piece. It is interesting info.

Brown plastic. Plain edge. In 1942 the Philadelphia Mint sent dies to private companies interested in supplying materials to substitute for bronze in one cent pieces. These dies were of a fanciful nature, with an obverse portrait from a Colombian coin but with the lettering LIBERTY / JUSTICE and the date 1942. The reverse incorporated a nicely done wreath and the inscription UNITED STATES MINT. The thought was for these companies to experiment with the dies and make "pattern" cents in different materials. This was done, with substances ranging from fiber to plastic to metal. These are listed in the Judd reference. The present example, in brown plastic, is quite attractive.

    PCGS Population: 1; none finer.

A couple generations ago the writer featured one of these on the cover of Empire Topics. This resulted in a visit from a member of the Secret Service, who stated that the piece could not be legally held. It was taken, and a receipt was given, with the promise that after it was studied there would be a report. The agent knew nothing about the background of this particular item, but stated that the Mint hadn't released them. Commentary was unavailing, and the piece passed from our possession. Today, in 2006, we still haven't heard a report. Presumably our coin is tucked away in some correspondence file somewhere in Washington!

  • There is simply too much darkside material available not to find something of interest, IMHO. I particularly like issues that the US was directly involved in, like the coinage of the Phillippines for example. How about some pillar dollars for the folks that prefer their coins old? Maybe some Irish coppers?

I started with a Birth Year set of World Coin mint and proof sets. Then I dabbled in some coinage from countries that my ancestors came from. Now? I still do both of the above but I also buy world coins that I find just plain beautiful or cool. I still collect US (type and a date set) and consider myself a US collector but, truthfully, there are a lot more beautiful world coins out there than beautiful US coins.

I've been scooping up greyside (Canada) bargains for years. Relatively plentiful here in Michigan, and lots of nice material to choose from.

I got tired of looking at the same old US material around here - had to do something else.

If you are turning towards the darkside (non US material), I hope you have more reasons motivating you other than the climbing price of US coins. Rising prices are becoming more common in many areas of the darkside also.

I won't be able to get all the USA coins in the grades I want, let alone trying for all that other stuff!
So I will have to agree.
