Baltimore-How did "ordinary" coins do?

I am really tired of reading about how "hot" the highest tier of the market is. How did ordinary coins do at Baltimore?

Average California fractional gold pieces at the B&M auction went for slighly strong prices. A very few went for less money.

My representative on the floor advises me that California Fractional golld supplies are drying up.

In that case, nearly all of my coins are ordinary and most are in the lower end of the ordinary range. image

Ordinary coins are the type of coins that average collectors might own but that the high-end dealers ignore and call widgets.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • By "ordinary" I take it you mean "stuff"--coins that you can find near sheet at 15 or 20 dealers. They were everywhere as collectors and dealers seemed to be selling them at small mark-ups or cost to buy really rare items that only come up once every 20 years. The exception was AU halfs and Dollars, there are some very aggressive buy orders for 1000 coin bags, and the prices are actually higher in the bags than in a dealer case raw -- for the comon/"ordinary" dates.image

BTW--ultra original-undipped pretty "collector" grade (VF-XF) coins aren't stuff or "ordinary". These are bringing as big a price multiple as the highest price tier, you just don't hear about them, and they are just as tough to find. image

i think this hobby is due to correct itself in the next few years.
    over exuberance comes to mind.

  • I can only say what I saw. Dealers did not want common ordinary Mint State 60-63 coins at any price unless they stole them. The honest ones really searched to buy clean, orginally toned, undipped slightly tougher denominations from Fine all the way to AU. That was the market I saw last week at auction and at dealers. They equally needed for the market very high grade eye-appealing material, but there is none except at auction.

im just back from baltimore and ordinary coins could be bought 5% to 10% back of bid! hard coins with premium quality for the grade brought really strong money!

Sounds to me like the "market" is now very much tiered. You better be holding the "right" coins or you are in trouble if you need to sell.

They're strong to me when I can buy coins at back of bid and I know that there is someone at the show who will buy the same coins sight unseen for slightly higher than bid.

Many collectors don't realize just how ordinary the coins they buy really are. Witness most Morgan collectors as an example.

to me complete sets of "ordinary coins" are quite impressive,...I mean it is collecting, not just who has the biggest toys

Hey some coins are more ordinary than others. For example I went shopping for an ordinary nicely rainbow toned Morgan Saturday. You can ordinarily find dozens of then for sale on ebay, at auction via teletrade and heritage. image So I did get up Saturday morning and said to myself (ordinarily I don't speak to myself) go buy this coin dude.

Edited to add, ordinarily I wouldn't have said this but it turned out to be a clashy and most likely a vam too. Just an ordinary clash though.

One statement came from a collector, the other from a dealer. Guess which is more likely to be accurate.
