Please help grade this coin

This coin is in an ANACS holder. I just don't agree with the grade assigned by ANACS. I am going to send it in to either NGC or PCGS for grading. Myself, I am not the greatest grader and could use some help with this coin. What do you think it will grade? I hope the pics are good enough for you to examine the surfaces.
Also, is there really any advantage to cracking the coin out of the holder before sending it in?
Thanks
Michael

It looks au50 to me, with very nice patina. Why do you need it in a new holder?

    NGC 50-53
    PCGS 45-50

I would crack it out if you are going to send it in.

XF45.......maybe...AU53 but that would be pushing it (possible though)....imho

btw...regardless of the grade....I like it!

  • Leave it in the holder and send it in for a x-over.... 53
  • I agree--It's looks somewhere beween EF-45 and AU-50. I think the current holder is fine because all you really need as a collector is to know it genuine and not cleaned, etc. Many dealers would just crack it out to sell raw, knowing the bust people like to argue about grade on raw coins/ or graded coins anyway. If they called it VF and you want it in a holder for insurance, then resubmitting to NGC might be worth it.................Pretty coin!!!image

Here are 3 examples I have in my collection of a PCGS XF45.
I had to copy your pics to my hard drive and lighten them up to get a better look at them.
It may go XF45, but I still think XF40

I would go 50 on this one 53 if luster is stronger than the pics show

It's a nice example! I like the large coins in the small ANACS holders. I'd keep her in that holder.

  • Very nice Bust---wouldn't be surprised if ANACS gave it 40--I think they are tough on the series.

MS-64 20K!! Heh, If the coin is that dark, and the luster doesn't go over Miss Liberty I'd say 45. It looks to be kind of a dead fish as far as luster on the obverse. Luster rules the day on these. Don't matter to me what the services say, as I see lusterless (dead fish) ones in 55 holders. Me thinks some folks are too obsessed with grade on these ol' Bust halves. Enjoy it for what it is! If it has luster going into the fields (and it doesn't look like it from the image) it might "Grade" better at one of the services.

  • I reallly appreciate all of this input, and for the pics of the EF45's. It's helped me out a lot, thanks!
The obverse has no real luster, the reverse has some luster, and it's graded by ANACS as an EF45.
I want to cross it over so I can put it in a registry set, but other than that reason, I like the ANACS holders too.

NGC would grade it AU50 or better, even if it lacks luster.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • It was in an ANACS 45 holder and it crossed to PCGS 45 as well. I was surprised as I had a feeling it wouldn't cross.

I'd go just about anywhere from 45 to 53 depending on the luster.

I agree with 45. The wear is just a tad too pronounced for an AU. It's a really noce coin! image
