I'm thinking of sending this off to PCGS. Thoughts on a grade?

Brian; this is a nice 64/65 coin, and a vam [ doubled dash] the second eight... I would not crack it out of its original holder, send it to ngc for grading in its original holder, ngc will also attribute the vam designation Great coin.. image
  • GSA 85-CC's are scarce in the holder. I would grade it a 63/64. You might be better off keeping it in the original GSA holder and getting it graded by NGC. They place their grading label on the original government holder. While the vast majority of my coins are housed in PCGS holders, I sent my CC GSA Morgans in to NGC. There is a hot market fo these.

    Just my humble opinion.

MS64... and I'd keep it in the GSA holder.
    When in doubt, don't.

Send it to NGC to get banded in the GSA holder. It might be a VAM-4 (Hot-50) as it is common among the GSA slabbed 85-CCs. The neck clash up from the eagle's right wing (left side on the reverse) looks too far to the left; it should be just barely to the left of the right leg of the "n" in "In". (Also look for clashing between the wing and arrowheads which is usually present on VAM-4.) The VAM-2 is often mistaken for VAM-4 and generally has more incidence of legend cracking on both sides than the VAM-4. NGC will further attribute it as a VAM-4 Hot-50 on the band if it is that.

Really nice and sure looks an easy 64 shot 65, and as others have said I'd send it to NGC and keep the GSA holder.

    Might even go MS65.

MS64 and I wouldn't have it removed from the GSA holder.

Very good shot at 65. And I agree with the others, keep in the GSA holder and have NGC tape it.

Dittos. MS65, keep it in the holder, send it to NGC if you want it graded.

    Thanks everyone!

  • Unless the ticks on the cheek are deeper and more distracting than the photo, it should go MS65. I'd pay about around $500 more in the GSA holder graded MS-64, than a PCGS MS-65 holder. Actually I don't want it in a PCGS holder at any price--they're all over the coin shows.
