1936 Walking Liberty Half Proof

I want to sell this coin for max $$$. I need advice. Should I get it graded? By whom? Does it need to be dipped or "conserved"? Anyone care to guess the grade?

All opinions appreciated. Thanks.

I hope it is just a bad image, but it looks like that coin already suffered a bad dip job. Maybe NCS can help?

It appears that this coin has the typical haze that so often found on original Proof coins from the 1936-42 era. It seems that this is the result of long term storage in the original cellophane sleeves and tissue paper. Many collectors don’t like this look, and from a marketing standpoint, the coin could be more saleable if a professional dips it who knows what they are doing. If you do it yourself and mess it up, it could cost you thousands.

There are purists out there who prefer that these coins be left alone. Still if you want to send it to NCS, it probably will be more attractive to many people.

  • OK, so what should I put as the declared value?

    At least $5K

WOW! Do you really think it's worth that? Wouldn't I want to put the lowest possible declared value on it that they would accept, to minimize the fee? Is that the minimum valuation you think they'll accept for this coin? Do you think I'll be able to get that much for it? I'm selling on eBay...

Sorry for all the stupid questions, I'm just really new at this. I'm trying to sell off a bunch of my grandfather's coins and currency and I'm willing to invest the time and energy to maximize the proceeds. Thanks for the help.

You need to get your self a greysheet first of all. This give typical dealer (not retail) prices for coins. By the starter pack with all 7 versions/issues. It is well worth the $20 or so it will cost. You can create an account, pay by CC, and download/print the issues.

    Greysheet

Next, learn about key auction sites and how to look up past sales. E-Bay is OK. Heritage is very good. Use their auction archives. You will need to create a free account.

    Two more points...

If they lose the coin, and you declared a low value, guess what they will pay you for it?

Bill Jones is right on with his advice.

If it were my coin (I'd keep it), but since you want to sell for maximum money, I would send to NCS. Value it at $5k, pay the price to get it professionally conserved. You can also have NCS submit it directly to NGC for grading, but I would have NCS return it to you in the standard Intercept Shield 2x2 holder. Then submit to PCGS for grading.

    Good luck with your grade.

One more point. E-Bay may not be the best venua for this coin. You might prefer and do better with a high profile auction house.

Just how hazy is this coin? The picture looks like it was taken with the light way too low. There might be more flash to it than it seems from the picture provided. I don't see any severe grade limiting problems. The small reverse spots might limit the grade to 65 or 66. I don't see hairlines or hits in the pictures.

The image is actually a scan, not a photo. It is not a good image, the coin looks way better (to me) in person. I plan to invest in some lighting and a tripod for my camera to try to get some better quality images. Some of the pictures on this website are incredible!

Thanks for all of the feedback.
  • GigEm, love your name!!! I would NCS it.
