Whats the value of an 1809 Bust Half?

Whats the approximate value of an 1809 normal edge bust half in AU-50?

The PCGS price guide lists it at $1,000. Yes, I realize this guide is normally too high, but last time I checked the value of that coin was about half that I thought.

Thanks in advance.

The Current CDNL Bid is $365.00 in AU-50. That's a long way off from $1,000.

I'm sure you can get an EF-45 coin in an NGC AU-50/53 slab for way less than $1,000. The going rate seems to be between $375 and $500 for common varieties in NGC holders, which is consistent with the Bid price. An actual strict AU-50 that is fully struck and has the original skin on it would fetch more, as would a better Overton variety.

You can't buy real AU Bust haves for Gray Sheet "bid." The sheet says common dates are bid/ask at $220/$240. You can't touch anything that is decent for much less than $300.

Having said that, a nice 1809 in AU is probably worth $500 or so. MS-60 bid is $1,050, but this is not the kind of coin is worth "the next grade up," which is true for many much scarcer early coins. Going by some of the quotes that I got at the last Baltimore show, the new rule of thumb might be the next two grades up. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
