It's the holder. Rattlers use little plastic tabs.

I would like to know the grade, I have a blast white one that looks just like that. Are the missing lines on the main sail indication of a weak strike or wear?

I can't remember the last time the guesses were so all over the place. Even ruling out the guess of "damaged, 45" in which the tabs of the holder were mistaken for rim cuts (I think), speculation ranges from 55 to 65! So -- what is it?

I'm guessing MS 63. I really like the album toning. I'm thinking that helped. These never seem to have the booming luster that Morgan dollars often have. I like my 65s to have FSL(tm). Full Sail Lines.

That's understandable. Columbian's are tough to grade. They aren't known for luster, particularly when toned. And the hair detail usually looks flat, and the reverses tend to be pretty weak at the centers.

This is much nicer than my Accugrade "commercial 63" in a 1986 slab, which is probably just a cleaned AU-50. I'd call Russ' coin one of those attractive AU-58s which keeps me looking at AU-58s instead of MS-61s.

If the picture is accurate (of course it is, after all it is RussView™) it is very attractive and a lock 64. 3 figure bump from 63 to 64 so crack that sucker and send it on a vacation to Newport Bch.
