1892 Barber Quarter: AT??? (POLL) Guess the Grade

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
Hi all,

I normally don't like coins with artificial toning. I just picked up this 1892 Barber Quarter because I liked the look and strike. Underneath the toning is the original skin and there is a lot of lustre. I am going to say that in this case I don't care if it is AT and there is a possibility it is not AT.

What are your opinions and Grade guesses on this one.

Edited: Forgot the pics

If you had to guess how do you think this coin was toned over the years? I only ask because I would like to gather opinions on this particular toning look and how it usually occurs whether natural or doctored.

When I see the same type of toning on both sides, I think AT.

Hmmm. 29 votes, 2 replies. So far it is 50/50 on Toning vs. AT.

Only 1 answer of Artificial Toning defended.

I hope to get a little more on how this toning may have occured.

Can't say whether this coin is AT or not because of the photo. The photo just doesn't look "live" so to speak (I don't know how to exactly describe that). You simply need to see the coin in person to tell.

However, the coin looks nice and you can consider that since this is a first year issue there are probably a lot of these with toning (since they were saved). Hence it is likely real. Very similar to type 1 1913 Buffalos which are abundant in a toned condition.

I would guess that it's nt, but would not have any strong theories on how it happened. Perhaps it was stored in some type of envelope with the right environmental conditions?

I agree with Jom that it is hard to tell from the photo ... too flat with the lighting and I can not see how the luster turns with the color ... does that make sense? ... however I also agree that it does not neccessarily look AT, in fact I am going to guess it is natural ... the bluish hint from storage in an envolope, the more russet rims from some time in an album ...

it has a nice look image

OK we are tied again for the main pole here is what I have so far

(+1 = point for Natural), (-1 = Point for AT)

In the end If Natural wins it goes for a slab attempt, If AT wins it goes into an album.....

1.) coinlieutenant: Not AT (+0 no reason)
2.) Steve27: Toning on Both Sides so AT (-1)
3.) jom: Likely real toning because it was a first year issue and saved by many (+1)
4.) myqqy: Possibly saved in an envelope with environmental conditions (+1 and nullifies Steve27's double sided toning theory)
5.) pursuitofliberty: Natural because of bluish hint from storage envelope and darker edges from an album (+1)
    6.) mozin: (+0 no reason)

TTT, still looking for a little more. I have really only two similar answers so far as to how this particular toning may have happened. I will send to the top one more time this evening and then end this thread.

    Thanks.

It will be graded as market acceptable.

It looks cleaned at one time and has retoned

    naturally.

    This mornings additions (3/17/2006)

7.) Darkmane: Cleaned and re-toned (+1 because this seems to be an accepted sometimes for grading)
8.) Bear: Same as Darkmane and mentions it is Market acceptable (+1)
9.) DickyBetz: NT (+0 no reason)
