Can a TRUE collector or dealer love modern and classic coins?

I love both Modern and classic coins...am I the only one that does?image
I need only one more bust dollar(1803) to complete my Large eagle collection. I also have a classic type set(in the works) listed under "The 96W set", plus a nearly complete $5 and $10 gold commemorative set in MS and proof also under "The 96W set".

Do any other board members love classic and modern coins or am I the only one or do I need to go thru the twelve step program?image

There is no question that a true collector can enjoy both, and many, if not most, do. I think that the recent (sometimes heated) discussions on these boards are more about the registry, the market for high grade coins, investment, and plastic, than they are specifically about collecting moderns (or classics). Collect what you enjoy, with discretionary funds, and ignore the rest.

In any hobby some folks like "old" stuff, some don't and some like both as I do. No one is better or smarter for what they collect. If you put a significant amount of your cash net worth into collecting regardless of how old something is, best do it intelligently and with acquired knowledge of the ramifications.

Any collector can collect anything and be called a true collector (to me). As long as they understand what they are collecting. Sure you can throw cents in a jar, which is collecting, but does that make you a true collector, I'm not sure.

I like to stick with the classic stuff but here and there I'll get a modern if it appeals to me, especially world coinage.

No, you are not the only one.

I have an extensive U.S. type set from 1792 to date, and I have all of the chreey wood box commemtive sets from the LA Olympics to the Smithsonian set. I have also been collecting all of the modern commemoratives and keep up the Proof sets.

People call me a "modern coin basher," but that's not true. I question the high prices that some people pay for very common coins in high grade, which are often only paid to buy a place on the PCGS registry. That's where I have the problem.

As a collector of Moderns one cannot compare the Moderns to the artistry and beauty of the Classic designs...They are truly unique....
On the other hand if one were to collect such beauties in the condition of the Modern Mint capabilities and characteristics...eg....high grade...you would definetely need to have deep pockets. In other words to achieve these dreams a life of crime is inevitable....................image

Good topic. I've collected coins from the 17th century to date, and put together top registry sets from the Classic Commems to the Platinum Commems. I didn't realize that there was any differences in my collections, until it was pointed out by modern bashers that one was "better" than the other, or one was "worse". When I collected classic commems, nicely toned examples brought stupid money, imho, as compared to lustrous white examples, but I didn't go on and on, ranting and raving about the incredible lack of sense of those willing to spend multiples of the price of the same coin in the same grade to get the "monsters".
I am not embarassed by any means about what I choose to collect, and will defend my right to choice. Having to defend my preferences does not negate the love and respect I have for all the denominations/series of coins I have collected. It just points out the sorry, ill nature of a few contributors.
I have, no matter the series, always collected the best I could find/afford. Geez, that's the credo of most coin aficianados and dealers. So what if in one, or more of the series I collect, those "best" are at the top of the grading scale?
Look at recent auctions: the top graded coins in both the classic and modern series, have brought final sales amounts that are multiples of the coins one grade point below. Yes this is true in both classic and moderns. The top grades bring multiples of the undergrade! Most of the inherent risks therein, are the same, whether classic or modern! image
    ok deep breath....
    ...ah, that's better. image

Check out the Dolly Madison commemorative silver dollar. Most of the modern $5 gold commems are nice too. The MAJOR exception is the reverse of the Mount Rushmore $5 gold. image Talk about a truly lazy bit of work by the artist!

Yes there are some clinkers in the modern commemorative series, most among the silver dollars, but there are gems to be found there.

I like them all. In fact, if I were Bill Gates, you guys would never get any because I'd buy them all and roll around in them!

    sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the problem lies in when a coin is slabbed in its holder that is a common coin available by the ton out of its holder and worth a few dollars or less out of its holder but in the holder it is worth hundreds to thousands of dollars

remember there is a big difference between collecting modern and classic coins and then investing in ego coins that are in plastic ga-ga grade ms/pf 69/70 holders................... quite a difference

No! You MUST choose one or the other. I think its stated in Section 4e in the ANA Bylaws.
Its like you can only be gay or straight. Pick one. Bi-sexuals are just plain greedy in my mind. So are collectors who have diversified interests! image

Posts are based on experience and are opinion only. Experiences and opinions of others may differ.

When you buy modern coins in slabs, you either pay a lot of money for slabs, which is a waste, or you pay a lot of money for high grades and cameo designations. Leave the registry competition to those who have a lot of money, or those who want to live in a state of constant dissatisfaction.

That's an awful lot of opinion for for one guy. It's funny how the only opinion this guy has
on classics is my "my my crusty busty", but he manages to talk around his feet enough to
slam moderns the rest of the time.

The fact that building Type Sets is as popular as it is tells me, yes- it is possible to love both classics and moderns and be a true collector.

That would be the equivalent of collecting 1909-S VDB cents and High-Relief $20s. You don't WANT to buy one at today's levels but everyone's doin it, and you just gotta have one.image

The real problem lies with letting others tell you what the problem is.

I immediately thought of Scooge McDuck. Anyone else remember the Huey, Dewey, and Louie comics where Scooge had a huge vault filled with coins and he would always play in the coins? I used to dream of doing the same thing!!image
