NGC to Pcgs crackout

Here's an 1806 half cent cracked out of a NGC holder and submitted to PCGS. The coin has a very soft strike but shows no appreciable sign of wear. The is still some luster and red showing on the upper obverse and the fields are beautiful- your opinions as to the before and after grades

    That's gotta hurt....
  • WOW!! Ouch and all the other choice words I am sure you used when you got the grade back.

I think that's ridiculous. Is someone just way off the mark? Or is either grade conceivable?image

  • Why did you crack it out?....Looking at it, you had to know it would come back lower....just curious.
  • Isn't this just part of the crackout gamble, er I mean game?

  • Why did I crack it out- only because every other half cents I have( and it's quite a few) are in PCGS holders so just for appearance sake. As far as being upset- not as much as you might think- I got back the same coin I sent in- I liked it when I bought it and I still like it. I will stay in my hands for many years to come.

Excellent attitude. I think the same way and crack everything to get the same PCGS holder. I like tidy collections of coins I like over hard to organize in holders with grades that may or may not be correct.

Crack out again and it will come back AU50. AU53 is a luck grade, IMO.

Resubmit it a few more times; eventually it will go MS63.

I agree with Steve27. If you don't see any wear, NGC got it right and PCGS got it wrong. Resubmit it. There is a big difference in value between AU53 and MS62. You may need to sell it some day and you deserve full value.

REAL Mint State copper coins, even the early ones have mint luster (or gloss) showing though the brown toning. This coin has dull surfaces. It's also got some verdigris patches on the reverse. As such you are fortunate that it made it into a holder. I’ve been BB’d for less.

EAC grading would call this coin AU-50 sharpness, net graded to EF-45 for the stuff on the reverse.
