Actually, if you assume that the the coins have toned and gradeflated to 66s in the past 17 years, the 89 pullback was just a pitstop on the way to today's higher levels.

May 12, 1989; CDN Cover page has a snipet; Dollars, Dollars, Dollars, everyone wants Dollars. An 81-s in 65 is Bid/Ask at 500/550 ... and as I remember they were still moving. Of course smart buyers were getting picky, and so many of those coins today would be 66's.

July 14, 1989; CDN Cover page has a snipet; MS-63 Dollars semm to have stabilized this week, however, MS-64 and 65 columns continue to reveal numerous minus signs. An 81-s in 65 is Bid/Ask at 325/350 ... and as I remember, people in the know wouldn't touch them for that.

However, as was just noted as I wrote this ... the grades then and now are not neccessarily the same

Shortly after PCGS first opened I thought these were going for $650+ due to the novelty and very limited supply. I recall buying a pile of MS65's in early 1990 for $300 a coin. MS64's were selling for $100 at that time.

Andy raises a good point. Prices haven't gone down as much as it seems because the 65s of 1989 are largely today's 66s.

I can find an invoice dated either OCT or NOV 1986 when I sold Don Ketterling of (then) Gold & Silver Emporium of Encino, CA five
    1904-O PCGS MS-64 $1's for $270 EACH!!!

These coins would likely grade MS-65 today (maybe a couple would get put in MS-66 holders via a bulk submission.) 1986 - the first
year of PCGS - was the tops for generic Morgan & Peace Dollars.
