cash, check , cc, paypal - does it matter??

I am going to Baltimore - Sunday, most likely. I will be there to buy. I was thinking I might be better off bringing cash rather then use CC or check just because I might bet that much better a deal. Any dealers care to comment - what would you rather have? I might spend $2000 at the most.

Good question but very few dealers take credit cards and check policy varies from dealer to dealer unless you can get a dealer to vouch for you.

I take it that you've never gone to a coin show before. They trust cash and not much else.

Checks & Cash work fine. Just be sure that you have proper ID or references from other dealers.

I prefer cash simply because I do not have to check out references. It is one less hassle.

    GOOD CHECKS rule.

Many dealers would NOT prefer to have the cash because it's more dangerous to carry.

Credit cards and Pay Pal change the game. Credit card and Pay Pal money DO NOT EQUAL cash and checks because the credit card company and Pay Pal to a percentage. As a dealer, if you negociate a price with me and then pull out a credit card, we have to reopen the negociation because you just offered me a lower price by at least 3%.

I think you left out the word"not" unless you crave excitement.

Very few dealers will take a check unless they know you or you can find someone they know that will vouch for you. I've never seen anyone take Paypal at a show. As previoulsy stated, cash rules.

The thing to do is to establish your reputation so that your checks will be accepted. Perhaps you could deal with someone through the mail, or you can offer a driver's license and a telephone number to really HONEST dealer. In any case, if you become a serious collector, you need to become known so that you can pay by check. I've been going to shows for years, and when I get the rare rare question when I'm paying by check, "Does anyone here know you?" I can rattle off a dozen names.

Carrying a lot of cash is even more dangerous that carrying a lot of coins. And now that prices have gotten to be so darn high, it a few thousand bucks can really get bulky, even when it is in C-notes.

And if there isn't anyone at the show that you can use as a reference, let the dealer know that you trust HIM. Give them the check and let them hold the coin til the check clears and then mail it to you. (Include a little extra in the check to cover the shipping.) This will help you to develop references that you can use in the future. (when I was younger and still developing references I used this method, and sometimes after I made that offer they would just let me take the coin with me. They figured that if I was willing to let them hold the coin until it cleared, then the check was probably good.)
