Date is 1874.......now whether its a P, CC or S remains to be determined when coin is in hand (if it can be determined).

Most likely it's an S. In fact, the CC is more common than the P, in this case.

Tell us what you find when you get it.

I would check its metallic composition. Might actually be one of the countless fakes coming out of China and Hong Kong in recent years, sanded down to resemble a dramatically well-worn circulation-strike coin. (I've seen this done to replica Flowing Hair "cents" and other modern reproductions.)

Looks like a deliberate attempt to wear it down.
  • I disagree---at this level of wear why bother to counterfeit? I wouldn't give anyone more than $10 for such a coin. Again, it's a nice piece for those who collecti low grade examples!

    I wasn't suggesting it's a transfer-die counterfeit made from a legitimately worn trade dollar.

I was suggesting that a counterfeit trade dollar might have been worn down to produce that result.

There was an article (in Coin World, I think?) recently, about a Gallery Mint replica coin (I believe it was a Chain cent) that was deliberately ground/worn down to obscure the obvious COPY lettering on the back.

If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.
