can this be cleaned?

Here's another casualty of improper storage. Can this hazing be cleaned? It's in the 3 o'clock position on the coin, LOL as if you could miss it.

Try MS70, but sometimes haze is there to stay.

steve is right, ms70 is best bet...just dip it in it, do not rub with qtip like some suggest, as may cause hairlines

  • Does this significantly affect the value? this is the 1995 W silver eagle. A casualty of my late father storing the 10th anniversary set in a safe that wasn't climate controlled.

No, not if you do it right. Just make sure that nothing but the liquid contacts the surface. Don't rub, don't wipe, don't pat... Don't do nothing ecept to dip and rinse. Air dry. 'Nuff said.

It would be great to see the "after" pics to see how it turned out......

  • It's flat-out crazy to use MS70 for the first time on a coin like this! Send it to NGS or practice on lesser proofs for a year or two first. What are you guys thinking!! Getting all, and I mean all, the MS70 detergent off a coin is problematic until you've worked out your own system. Rinsing and air dry? No alcohol or acetone? Ever heard of water spots? Rob

The guy asked a question, it was answered. Nice that you can get yer panties all bunched up for harebearva's sake... It's his frickin' coin, and he asked the question.

I didn't tell him what to rinse with - I personally think that ether is the best (but don't try this at home, kiddies...) Reagent grade Acetone is popular. Ever Klear works...

All I was trying to say is DON'T RUB. Oh, and by the way, DON'T RUB! You will get hairlines. Don't pat or wipe, either.

Better yet, send it to NCS.

    Geez.

No MS70, no Acetone. Just boil the coin in vinegar for a while. It will not clean the coin but it will now smell like a salad. AHHHH. Nothing like oil and Vinegar with a touch of pepper.
Is there some reason you just can't leave that coin alone?

  • I think I'm all for the leave it alone idea. I have NO IDEA what I'm doing cleaning a coin. I've never even handled any proofs outside of plastic. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ebay the set and let someone else who knows alot more than me take a crack at it. Ya think?

Excellent choice not to clean this valuable coin yourself. Ship it off to NCS (Numismatic Conservation Services), an affiliate of NGC, and for around $100 they will clean it: your choice if you want it graded and holdered by NGC at the same time or if you want it back in a flip to sub to PCGS or to put back in its plastic capsule.

You may take a hit if you put it on eBay as is: on the other hand, many prospective buyers know they, too, can easily ship it off to NCS for cleaning so the hit may not be too big, especially for this coin, but you never know. Good luck. Rob

    "Ever heard of water spots?"

Yes, "water spots" are not water spots, they're actually caused by planchets that are improperly cleaned at the mint before the coin is struck.

I think you should give it a soak in MS70, followed by a rinse and a soak in water. Then blow dry with a hair-dryer. It's a very low risk process, just use clean containers (plastic bowls) and you'll be fine. Try it with a cheap coin first if you want to prove to yourself that it's easy.

And the 'sell it now' price would be????????? Cheers, RickO
  • Steve, thanks for your manered and helpful response. As a newbie, I should sit on the sidelines, I guess, but had to junp in when the board seemed to be telling someone new to cleaning coins to just dip and rinse in water a $4000 ASE proof.

I was not using "water spots" in a technical sense but in the more general sense that we all know droplets of water can leave residue behind, especially if the water is hard.

First time I'd heard of using a hair dryer! Neat idea, but me,myself and I would still be a bit cautious about doing much of anything to a valuable, bullion-silver-soft ASE proof. Dropped too many clad coins made slippery with MS70. I've used it on at least 500 BS SBAs and Ikes (and experimented with gentle q-tip swabbing on Ike proofs to satisfied myself that a gentle swab leaves no hairlines at 30X).

My hunch is some of us have worked out our own methods and some of us may hold them pretty close to our vests because of the time and cost of working out a method and the value of its results. So thanks for your input.

Maybe this thread is a backdoor "how to clean moderns" - using the front door would probably get us all tarred and feathered.......

  • Given you have a $4,500+ coin, you might want to send it to NCS and have the pros do it (even if you want to keep it raw).

I agree to just leave it alone. Especially if you've never done any dipping or cleaning at all. The hazing that appears on the coin does not appear to be so significant as to diminish the value of what you have there.

If you are going to sell this on EBay anyway, let the new owner worry about it.
