something really funkadelic going on with thast chain looks like a piece of rust that looks like the face will fall off the coin split from the planchet

The guy has a 100% positive feedbacks with over 200 transactions. Shipping could have been a typo. He does say something about the shipping being negotiable so maybe it was just an attention getter and the buyer clarified ahead what the seller really wanted. Sounds like a clever way to get out of paying an exhorbiant EBAY fee based on the sale price.

My guess is this is just a clever way to get around having to pay an exhorbiant EBay fee based on the sale price. The BIN buyer probably emailed the guy and asked if that shipping price was for real. At that point the seller probably told him what he really wanted for the coin and had the amount over a grand chalked up as a shipping charge. Note, the description does suggest that the shipping price is negotiable.

The coin looks like heII, the grade listed in the description is not what it says on the current holder and shipping is $9500 and youSTILL assume that the buyer sent a rational email prior to hitting the BIN?
  • northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well the slab says "genuine" and "corroded." I own two of these myself and one is on par with that offered and the other better. The pre-slab paper grade appears as represented. I would grade it a G rather than an F myself, but with the date visible and the chain mostly all there this is a coin still worth more than $1000. My guess is the buyer paid at least another grand in shipping. Am curious if this is one of the new ANACS grades as last year it would have been entitled to a net grade even with the corroision.
  • For $9,500 shipping, he better have it shipped across the United States in a military convoy.

But really, this is rediculous and eBay needs to crack down on him. I wonder if the guy that placed a bid saw those shipping rates....

EDIT: Nevermind, he didn't bid, he BOUGHT IT?!?!?

He simply wants to avoid the final value fee.

    Speechless. I'm speechless.

  • So why not go all the way and offer it for a BIN of $1? You'd save even more on FVF that way...

I'm surprised he hasn't been reported for this blatant fee avoidance and ebay hasn't pulled this auction. Also, I get the feeling his perfect 100% feedback isn't going to last.

But you only pay $1 for each additional item shipped, so it could be a great deal in you buy in quantity.

The question posed as to why not one dollar and why EBay hasn't pulled the auction provide the answers to each other. A BIN of one dollar with an exhorbiant shipping fee would probably get the auction pulled. A BIN of a grand gives EBAY a better monetary return than your average beany baby and besides to the non numistist a corroded penney would hardly appear to be worth more than a thousand dollars anyway. I say the seller was quite clever. As an EBAY stockholder I guess I should be incensed that this is some kind of fee avoidance that personally hits me in the pocketbook. On the other hand I am not so sure that EBAY's over aggresive fee increases of recent are not even more detrimental to me by discouraging sellers from listing on EBAY.

Another likely reason the seller started the BIN at $1000 was so he would not be pestered by non serious buyers. The pool of buyers willing and able to spend $1000 on a coin is more limited and also likely more knowledgeable as to what a realistic value would be for the coin itself.

I was reminded of a scam a couple years ago around christmas when someone was selling a printed page with a picture of an xBox for a couple hundred bucks

Maybe someone should try selling an old ANACS picture of a nice rarity (sans coin)image

Am I the only one who thinks this is a pretty darn nice chain cent? Okay, it's not a perfect planchet, but how many chains are on perfect plans? Judging by the pic, it is free of the any cleaning and the monster pitting, cuts, rim hits and what-have-you that is seen on so many chain cents. I think it would be a well above average chain cent in-hand. A lot of people cannot afford or do not want to spend the money for a perfect specimen.

The shipping may well have cost only $9.50, but who knows what the buyer may be paying in total...

I was searching for something yesterday out of the coin field and came across a user name of...

    "Acmestuff-com" (not the real name)

    AND....he had about 15 items for sale. H O W E V E R....... on a ...wild....guess.... I tried my browser on www.acmestuff.com (DOT com) and ....... presto!

No..."store" fees. And THOUSANDS of items on the website.

Looks like the buyer got a real steal if shipping was less than ten bucks.

The coin is a corroded piece of crap. In the days when there was some sanity, Chain Cents like this could not find homes at $2,000. Today it’s $1,000 + $9,500 for shipping. image

    bill,

the shipping was 9.50. it was a typo.

it appears to have been a great deal for such a unique coin.

If it's a typo, why does he specifically cite the shipping cost in bright red letters?

Take into consideration the shipping cost when you are submitting a bid.

He also writes "discount available" beside the shipping charge which is ONCE again shown as $9,500 in the header of his offering.

I can see no evidence that the shipping charge is a typo. $9.50 would not cover the cost of mailing this coin via Insured Register Mail or even First Class Insuraed.

Someone should email the buyer and ask if he expects to receive the coin; maybe give a link to our discussion here.
  • fcfc Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭
i see 9,500 listed in two places on the page.
    in black text.

since the page appears to be generated by ebay when
someone fills in a blank, i still see it as a possible typo?

i guess i was just trying to be helpful and thought
    you misread the thread.

Well that was my original assumption, but the poster who said he was told the shipping was in error did not claim that the seller suggested a higher BIN with reduced shipping.
