I got a very compelling email from Chase Bank today asking me to take a "survey" and get $100 added to my Chase account for my efforts. All I had to do was log into the site via the email link and do the 2 min. survey.

One problem.....I don't have and never had an account with Chase Bank!

If there is ever any question then always go directly to the site, never click on a link from an e-mail.

Keep an eye on your credit report, in case anyone logged into your account and got ahold of any other information that could be used to steal your identity. Unlikely from PayPal, as it doesn't have your SSN, but I suppose it's possible.

Iget at least one of those scam e-mails every day.
"Let me tell ya Bud, you can buy junk anytime!"
  • this happened to me about 8 or 9 months ago. Go directly to ebay and change your account info. change your password and if you have a different credit card to oput on file change it also. I would cancel the card you gave the spoof site and request another. it's a pain in the a$$ but it could save it as well.

Paypal will address you by your full name used to open the account.

If the email is to Dear member, just delete it or forward it to spoof@paypal.com and delete it.

It's best to never log into any financial account from a link in an email.image

EBay will do the same, addressing you by both your full name and eBay ID.
  • Greetings,

That is the easiest way to tell the real thing from a phishing expedition, they will not say dear account holder or something like that. It will ALWAYS start with dear Billy Bob or whatever your name is, another way is to hold your cursier over the link they want yo to click on and it will most likely show the URL you will go to when clicked is different then the one displayed in the email (at least that is the way AOL works).

True but I'm thinking some of the really good scam artist can make it show something different from where it really goes. image

bruce, seems to me having to change info 3 times is still a lot cheaper than changing wives that many. I hope she is okay.
Might I suggest adjusting your email settings. Add these accounts/email addresses to the block list. It's simple. Don't LOCK her out, teach her what to be aware of. Once she knows how to rid the email of junk.... you'll be a lot happier in the long run, I think image

  • What a pain, sorry to hear it.

I always send these to Spoof@Ebay or Spoof@paypal and let them do the work. They will let you within a day if it's legit or not. I probably only get one from PayPal for every three that I get from Ebay but there is no way to verify them like on Ebay. They're never legit it seems!
