Looks like a low grade unc. to me, maybe MS63 or a point lower perhaps. That pic also appers to me to be taken under the best possible lighting scenario to show those colors, and I would doubt the coin is as colorful or flashy in hand under normal lighting, JMO.

I agree that it looks odd on a gold coin. Sort of like candy. Don't think I like it much.

Shake and bake, gold never tones like that.

interesting how color on gold is disliked by the majority!

i also find it unattractive and unnatural.

i have never seen a half eagle, nor a eagle that ever
    looked like that.

Some un-solicited advice, if you're not aware how certain coins tone and what is normally seen...... take the advice that has been given to you by members of this forum. My post is not made to embarrass you or flame and just want to make this clear. I noticed you like those Bust halves that are blast white in the center with that vibrant "Blue" around the periph. Buy what you like, but just know IMO and many others they have at least been dipped, if not cleaned. And also many have been "Boinked" with in other ways. Again, buy what ya like..... but you will indeed get burned eventually.

Many folks these days want to see "Pretty" and don't seem to care whether it looks natural for the series. That's fine, but again.... be careful out there. And yes, I include that icon coin you are using.image

    My ring hasn't discolored.

Nor has my mom's ring, or my grama's ring.

Why is it that 14 k gold that is so many years old, has been in contact with everything a hand can throw at it won't discolor, but that DE did?

Saints, for some reason, can acquire more vibrant color than other classic gold series. I do not have an explanation, as the composition is the same. Nonetheless, I am fairly certain that this image is juiced and the coin will not look so vibrant in hand.

Can't be RYK, it's a board member selling, and quite possibly the image was taken by another "respected" member and ebay seller. Text

I've seen that coin in-hand in Florida at FUN. I didn't immediately notice the colors until I picked it back up and started twirling it into the light catching a percentage of the colors at each angle. It's definitely different.

Gee, STman, then I must be off my rocker.

Just to be sure, perhaps the OP should go through a box of Saints at the next Heritage auction to get an idea what the typical appearance is for Saints and perhaps look at a couple hundred more on the bourse. Surely, the OP will get an idea what the typical range of coloration for a Saint is. Unlike AT silver coins, to my knowledge, you can't make the coloration of a Saint better (except with Photoshop), but if you leave it alone for nearly a hundred years, it may develop some warm and subtle hues that I find very attractive.

dont forget the copper toned examples. i consider those
    quite pretty and legit.

then we have the all time fav orange and dirty toned.

some claim they see green gold color.. but alas i have yet to
    see this in person.

Must be, I used to think I knew what certain coins looked like in person after collecting for over 20 years. But many of the fine members of this board have "Persuaded" me that I don't. Heh

It's interesting that gold coins have been dredged up from the ocean after hundreds of years, they have been dug up from 1000 year old sites, and some have been in collections for hundreds of years, but none of them have toned like that. Wonder how that happened?
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?
  • Any toning on a U.S. Gold coin would come from the copper alloy, not the gold.

    IMO
    (1) 5K is nuts
    (2) This toning is shake and bake for sure.
I'd rather be lucky than good.
  • Gold is a noble metal. Right?

<Amazing to me that PCGS holdered that coin.>

The modern gold must be doctored, right? The Saint doesn't look right either.

Now, all you natural guys need to start liking crusty dirt, very dark stuff and so forth... else-wise, if you don't like "ugly toned" and you don't like "Art Toning" you are hypocritical....
  • A while back Mark Feld had a rainbow toned Saint for sale -- if I recall correctly it was not as vivid, but did have the same type of colors. When he comes back to the boards it would be interesting to see the coin again for comparison.
  • I bought a silver coin that was brought up from Manila Bay. It had another coin covering most of it. So it had a crescent of corrosion. I guess gold won't corrode in salt water like that. Gold is a noble metal. image

I would pass with that pattern of toning and those colors on a Saint. It may be legit, but..... So for 5K I could probably get a really really nice Saint without a question mark hanging over it.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Hey Carl, you know where I sit, More crusty for me. Some folks should enjoy and understand the "crust" factor better IMO. Many of these crusty coins have very nice iridescence when viewed and appreciated properly. BUT, everybody just wants to see "Pretty" and "Pretty" pictures these days.
And again, many collectors and dealers don't care how or why it's toned the way it is just as long as it's "PRETTY."
"Who cares how it toned.... if it's pretty and you like it is all that matters." Yeah, many dealers will say this. Myself, I do indeed care how it toned, and I like to evaluate this kinda stuff to see if it makes sense. Dog97 and myself always had debates and opinions on this stuff. Very enjoyable, try it sometime folks. OK, all done now! Hahaha

That's just great with me as I snap up every crusty Bust half that interests me. Ya ll will be sorry some day.... or not. Heh

It looks to me like it was stored in a 2x2 envelope for 50 years and then found its way into the hands of a Bay area dealer who then sold it to a respected ex-PCGS grader who then submitted it for grading. Happens all the time.image

It's the dipped out bright yellow gold that should called what
old gold "doesn't look like." This coin could be perfectly legit. I would also think that the green on it is slightly enhanced. But orig gold can look like this. Whether its worth 8X MS63 money or 10% over MS63 is up to the individual. I prefer the nice orig coppery look with no additional premium. It is very hard to see green and red on gold coins even when auction houses describe them that way.
