Disgusted

Anyone else find it disgusting how many Kirby Puckett items have gone on ebay in the last day? I find it very disturbing on how many people profit from other peoples deaths ie Pat Tillman, Earhart etc

    Ya know...

I see what you're saying but this happens every time and will continue to happen...

Interesting point? There has to be a buyer or this wouldn't work?

there have been nearly 8000 items listed in the last two days after the news of his stroke and then his death came out. there a lot of one day sales. like mike said they need buyers for this to work. do these people bidding think that when he is lowered into the ground that you no longer will be able to buy his cards.

as i said before typical american thinking. 1) i want it now regardless of price--2) i'll throw in a box in a corner and never look at it again--3) i'll go to the next flavor of the week and repeat process 1 & 2.

I personally find nothing offensive about this. Poor Kirby is not being exploited. Sellers are just trying to make a little extra money on the fact that, for a week or so, people will take note of the fantastic baseball player Kirby was.
  • I saw a 1985 psa 9 Topps Puckett go for over $100.00.

  • Just remember, the "song of the year" at the Academy Awards was something along the lines of "It's hard out there on a pimp". As long as we glorify this garbage, our morals will continue to errode. I really think there's a connection between the two. The type of "disgust" you feel is likely that you are the only one this stuff bothers. Take heart--if we're ever sent into the War, you're the kind of guy I want in the bunker with me. I'm proud of guys like you stepping up and being disgusted.
I TOTALLY understand Stoney's premise, too. He's absolutely correct. There's just a flavor to this thing that rubs me the wrong way. It just smacks of disrespect. I've looked at it many different ways and the bottom line is--disrespectful.
Perhaps it's a good thing for Puckett fans? I don't know.

  • What I find more disturbing is that people are sooo stupid! When a player dies, their autograph should go up in value because they can no longer sign. Kirby cards are no rarer after his death than they were a year ago when he was still living.

I remember when OJ was on trial... His rookie cards were selling for like ten times what the book price was.

Now you can't even give OJ cards away.

  • I had been negotiating with a seller to buy a game used Kirby Puckett bat last week. On Sunday I emailed him that I would take it. I then found out Kirby had a stroke. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. People have them all of the time. I paid the seller on Monday morning. Later that day Kirby died. I will never forget that I bought that bat on the day he died. Kind of disturbing.

What's really sad is how many losers out there will go through the trouble of scanning something like a Puckett 88 Topps All Star card, put it up for auction with a 1 cent minimum bid and $1 shipping, and pray that someone bites. So let's see-- IF it sells you'll make around 40 cents after the listing fee and shipping, and if it doesn't you'll eat the listing fee. Assuming it sells half the time you're going to make around a nickel.

    Get a job.

If there are people out there willing to buy the stuff and they have the stuff to sell.... I can't really blame the sellers..

  • I can... there will always be idiots. that doesnt mean we have to be one just because there is a stupid buyer willing to buy some pucketts for a couple bucks. if you own puckett stuff sacrifice the few bucks you can make to save your dignity.

I have to admit that it bothers me too. Somewhere deep inside, it just doesn't seem right. Achieving a handsome profit does not excuse poor or disrespectful behavior IMO. To me, the ends do not always justify the means. Of course, I bet most of the sellers don't even think about it as being distasteful. And Stone is right, there has to be a buyer here too.

Kirby was indeed a great player!
  • Tell me if this makes sense... For some reason I don't have a big problem with people selling items of older players that pass away. For instance, when Johnny Unitas died and Wilt Chamberlain, I didnt have as big of a problem seeing their memorabilia on Ebay. However, when Daryl Kyle, Puckett and Pat Tillman passed, it bugged me much more. Probably because unexpected deaths are so tragic.
    Thoughts?
