Hi again i am back with another question about the stone mountain comm. I had just bought one off of ebay about a week ago . The coin looks to me to be a AU 50-53 i think . I bought this coin because it looked to have a counter stamp on it . Can anyone tell me where the stamp would be and is there numbers and letters both or just one or the other. I can read the # 8 and mabe a 3 and a 1 next to the right wing and under the America. None of the numbers are uniformed . Sorry i have no picks for you to look at mabe i can find someone to take a good pic and blow it up so you people can see it .

The location and design of a counterstamp on a coin will vary depending on who did the stamp, and why. There are many varieties.

The most common type of counterstamp is the "state and numeral". Another type is the "State and SL", the SL stands for State Legislature and were most likely gifts to the politicians to encourage them to promote sales. And what I believe to be the most coveted are the UDC stamps with a high number. UDC stands for United Daughters of the Confederacy and it is believed the high numbers represented membership and / or chapter numbers.
