1953 Proof Set - break it up?

I have a 1953 Mint Proof set that I bought as my birthyear set (now y'all know how old I amimage ). I'm wondering if it would be more valuable to break it up and have coins graded or just keep it as a Mint Proof set. Just the 1953 IKE might be more valueable than that ungraded set. You experts share your thoughts plz. I'm a newbie coin collector but very much into learning everything I can about the coins I'm interested in.

Welcome aboard, and have fun. This is what I did with my 1954 set...

I don't like the mint's packaging for these early sets. I sent in my 1954 set and had it graded. Of course I kept the packaging, but at least the coins are out of it.

It all depends upon the quality of the coins.

Chances are of the coins are NOT cameo Proofs on BOTH sides and, it does not make a lot of sense to break it up. Cameo and Deep Cameo coins are the ones that really go for premium prices. If you receive grades of PR-65 and definitely if they are lower, you are better off leaving the set intact. Non cameo PR-66 coins do carry a premium, but are not great sellers for most Proofs in the 1950s (Since 1950 Proof coins tend to come dull that year might be exception). As you go up the scale to PR-67 and higher, it is worth breaking a set; but the services do not hand out very many of those, and in reality most Proof coins from the early 1950s don't qualify for those grades. Most of them have a spot, minor hairlines or have been dipped in such a way as to lower the grade.

  • Welcome ! I am a new as well, and from what I have learned on here, hold off doing anything until you educate yourself as
    much as you can.

    THEN pull the trigger image
  • Yes, it's in the Capitol Plastic Holder. The Franklin looks very nice to my untrained eye. Not a cameo but a very shiny nice strike. The Lincoln penny looks awesome to me. So bright shiny copper.

  • Not sure if it would up the value any, but if you do get them graded, I bet they'd look nice in an NGC multicoin holder. image
