Look at the toning, let me hear your opinions!

Now after all those toning discussions, how's about another one. image

Here's a 2 Mark Saxony 1909, what do you think NT or AT?

  • ok - here's a question that I have to ask back atcha -

Do YOU like the coin, i.e. the look, the surfaces, the strike, etc?? If YOU like the coin and the price is right, the what the heck does it matter whether or not the coin is NT, AT or any other 'T' in the book? YOU are the one who gets to be pleased by having the coin in YOUR set so if you like it does it really matter?????

btw - def NT all the way

When I first read "classic" Franz Beckenbauer crossed my mind. One of his classic sentences during a press conference was:

"We call it a classic, a Klassiker!"

Don't know if some of you can remember him though, he once played football in New York.

    Good point, Cecil!

I like the coin, but anyway, it almost looked too perfect too me. image

I'm surprised that nobody voted for AT so far!

  • You're right - the toning is perfect for an NT coin (I hope to high heaven the docs haven't gotten this good yet...), the color differences are progressive (from dark to light) the transitions between colors is gradual and not abrupt, etc.

I would jump all over this one in a heartbeat if I collected the 2 mark German coins!!!

Udo, you'd be surprised at how many "soccer" fans this forum has. And they're all old enough to remember Beckenbauer and Muller. image What a duo.

Beckenbauer? Don't you mean Der Kaiser? image

That was the New York Cosmos of the old NASL; As I recall old Franz got to team up with Chinaglia and some guy named Pele.
  • How do you tell the difference between AT and NT exactly?

Going on my past record where i've said "that's a nice tone!" (which is rare, everyone turns round and says "you do know it's AT don't you?"... whereas i reply "no", and it's always the same).
  • Good question Sylvestius.

I am unable to offer a constructive thought as to the red X I see... I hope the coin was nice and NT...

I am more in the corner or Sylvestius about toning. However, I like the toning on that piece - top drawer coin.

Udo, I am sorry that Ajaan and I are both idiots (he slightly more so than I). Truer words never written!! image

I remember Beckenbauer and Muller. I never really understood what the big deal was about Der Kaiser, but Muller was an explosive goal scorer with one of the best turn around shots of all time. I guess as a kid I only liked watching the goals.

I'm not so sure it's NT... hard to pinpoint why (maybe the spots on the obverse top), but I can't sign off on the NT consensus. The toning also seems a little too "smooth"....

I'm still on the fence about this one.
"Men who had never shown any ability to make or increase fortunes for themselves abounded in brilliant plans for creating and increasing wealth for the country at large." Fiat Money Inflation in France, Andrew Dickson White (1912)
  • I say NT because of the spot behind the head on the obverse.
