How out of control is ebay sniping?

Is it unfair to snipe or just the way it is these days?

It used to be on Ebay, now getting snipped on Heritage too!

Why bid on anything unless there is a minute? Have been outbid on 100 coins by $1 or less by snipers. Now I feel like a cheat since I got a snipe program and I started to actually win coins.

Nothing is "out of hand" about it. A bid is a bid, whenever it comes. With all the shenanigans on Ebay (i.e. shills) the only way to protect one's self is by sniping.

Your high bid is your high bid, regardless of when you enter it. If an item sells for more than your high bid then you should have bid more or you didn't want it at that price anyway.

I have a surefire way of defeating any and all snipers. I place my high bid initially and forget about it. If I get it under the price I want, great - if I don't, I would have paid too much anyways.

Not sniping is throwing money away. (It gives the others plenty of time to rethink their bid, and up yours).

If you bid your max than you didn't get snipped,
someone just wanted it more than you.

Since i discovered "sniper" software i place all my bids that way, 6-7 days in advance.
I always place my max bid with sniper software.

The last 15 coins i bid on i was outbid either prior to "sniper time" or by another sniper
that wanted it more than i.
I don't feel cheated or have any remorse that i didn't bid "enough"
    I had bid my max.

With sniper i don't have to sit in front of the computer screen cycling the frefresh button and i can also
be bidding on multiple coins that close at the same time.

What's wrong with sniping? If you bid your max and get outbid and complain about it then it looks as though you were willing to pay more but you're a friggin cheapskate.

Before sniping, the highest bidder would get the coin. Now that there' sniping, well... never mind. Nothing has changed!

i agree. why pay at all?

simply put your high bid in and check if you won later.

sometimes I will watch a coin I do not really want due to its
price. when it is closing people are still slowly bidding with
spirited interest. obviously the price is way low for the coin.

so in the last 10 seconds you see a flurry of "snipes", heh.
until the big cheese comes along and blows away all the snipers
with a true bid of what the coin approx sells for normally.

so, just bid what you think it is worth, one time. when it happens
    is irrelevant.

If you place a max bid too early you may be setting yourself up for getting shilled.

Same as if you are at a real auction and there area others there bumping up the bid.

You don't know if they are shill bidders or not.

On eBay, I place my high bid within the last few seconds of the auction.

Exactly, decide what the coin is worth to you and bid it. If you lose you were saved from overpaying. If you win you bought the coin for what you were willing to pay.

On average you guys end up paying too much. If instead you set up a snipe at your max bid, then your bid will not be run up by "inchworms".
  • Options
    fcfc Posts: 12,789 ✭✭✭
    inchworms, funny term but accurate.

you are assuming the person placing the reasonable bid
loses their head and bids 10 times poopsheet.

you have to get in the frame of mind that your one bid is
reasonable, not moon money. just an honest bid that most
sellers will probably see as "reasonable".

If they're placing their max at what they're willing to pay they can't be paying too much. Your premise is correct, though, but should be restated as "paying more than you have to."

If I throw out max bid and loose by a lot I don't care, heck if someone wants to pay more than me they should get the coin but when I bid a coin up from $20 to $200 with a max bid of $405 on a coin that some wins on a snipe of $406 that just sucks. Had the bid been $200 when the sniper came in I would find my bid wins if I snipe it at the end with a $405 bid.

It must work because since I got that program I won 9 lots 3 at close to my max bid all on the snipe and the wons I lost I was fine to lose at the price they sold for.

There's nothing wrong with eBay sniping per se; the way the system is set up, I think it's foolish NOT to snipe. But I do think the combination of *widespread* sniping plus the competitive "fury" of bidding has sent many e Bay sale prices out of control. If someone puts a really nice coin with a really good picture up for bidding, chances are very good that the final sale price will be considerably higher than if you bought the same coin from a reputable dealer.

As such, it rarely pays to watch eBay any more.

As a seller, it's great. As a buyer, nurturing a business relationship with some dealers, especially those specializing in your own interest, seems better AND cheaper than playing the eBay sweepstakes -- at least when you're looking at coins that are very nice and with clear images. eBay is still fine for gamblers (who don't see a really good picture but have a "hunch"), for finding miscategorized items that few people see and for cherrypicking in some coin series, but by and large, as often as not you can do just as well off a fixed price list with a reputable dealer for the good stuff.

I've been buying on Ebay since 1999, and I don't believe I've ever bid with more than 6 seconds left in the auction. It's absolute foolishness to put your maximum price up there, days early, for some numbnuts to F5 his bid until he's above you. We all know that Ebay is 70% bleating sheep, 20% hardened criminals and 10% predators. Me, I'm an honest man with a carnivorous streak. image
