charity auction- 1905 Toned AU58ish IHC! lots on controversy!

I am donating about 30 coins for this auction. They range in value from $10 to $125+.
If you have a coin or two that you would like to donate for this auction, please PM me with pics so that I can post them.

Help on this is greatly appreciated. Heart disease kills 1 of 3 Americans - think about it.

First coin coming up soon!

Funds can be sent via paypal or check and are 100% tax deductible. My paypal is mikefirst1@aol.com.

RULES:
1) First bidder to post a bid has priority over other bids posted later.
2) Each Auction will run for 3 days.
3) Postage will be in addition and is up to the winning bidder how they want the coin delivered.
4) Donated coins from others will be mailed by the donating party directly to the winning bidder.
5) Minimum Bid increments of $1
6) Each Auction will end 72 hours after it started
7) Winning bidder will be mailed the coin AND a receipt from the American Heart Association for their contribution
8) If you just want to make a contribution, you will still get a receipt.

Start time on Lot#1: 6:05p.m. CST 2/11/2006
End time: 6:05p.m. CST 2/14/2006

First coin up for bids is a 1905 Beautifully toned Indianhead Cent. Looks like it might be MS65. But remember, this is for CHARITY, for the AHA so pah-LEASE don't argue with me on the grade or the coloring (AT/NT/whatever). This cent would easily go for over $100 on the Bay. Bid as high as you can - high bidder will recieve the exact coin shown.
Thanks for the contributions!

I will be going out this evening to another fundraiser for another cause and I hope someone here will keep this thread from dying. Remember - I am DONATING 30 coins for this charity auction. Please, if you can, help out.

I'm going to give a few guesses as to why this auction has not seen more action, and they may be correct or not but they are how I am seeing it.

    1) Only one coin is being auctioned at a time without other coins in the pipeline being listed. This can make others wonder what or if other coins will really come to be listed.
    2) The thread is not pasted to the top by CarolJ.
    3) Do you have any heartfelt (no pun intended) reasons for running this charity auction? Remember, the successful ones during the aftermath of Katrina and 9/11 had quite a bit of emotion attached to them and Jeremy is very upfront as to his motivation for his auction series.
    4) The coin is wildly overgraded and I don't like to think I am being lied to; perhaps others feel the same way.
    5) The hype about what this coin is worth on ebay just "feels" bad.
    6) What does your response to ER mean?

I'm certain there are other reasons, and you may have a wildly successful auction, but I can see these points as being ones that might drag it down.

Tom - anyone can denigrate anything, and you have done a good job. but let me say this:

CarolJ hasn't had time to look at it
If you think it's overgraded - who gives a sh*t - it's for charity for the AHA and the pics are WOW
What it may sell for on the Bay is a fact
I don't know what you mean by the last question.

Bottom line - if you think the American Heart Association is a bad deal then sit on the sideline. Otherwise, ante up.

This seals the deal if you ask me.

Well, if you're trying to make a complete shambles of your auction, then you are doing a bang-up job with your response to my observations. To begin with, I didn't denigrate anything, I was simply posting opinions in response to a comment by nederveit as to why you had not had much action thus far. If you had actually taken the time to read what I wrote instead of flaming away you may have comprehended that fact. As for your witty retort, the coin in question appears to be a POS AU that is scratched yet you proudly display it as MS65ish. Most of us do not appreciate being wildly misled when the images can speak for themselves. Of course, the classy manner in which you worded your response will no doubt have droves of people wanting to support your efforts further. The assumption that it would easily be a $100+ coin on ebay is equally insulting, is far from fact and the hype can turn people off. My last point was your response to ER where you wrote

What the heck does that mean? Is that also meant to make people want to support your efforts? Lastly, why should I give to the AHA through you? Is there any reason for that? Can I not give on my own? Please, for the sake of the AHA, try to grow some thicker skin and act a little more professional and mature.

I agree with AU as the grade. You can see discolorations in the fields which would come from slight wear.
  • I was going to donate $3000 in coins to the AHA but based on what I have seen so far as far as the people here wanting to try and corrupt a good thing, I have changed my mind.

I will follow thru with the IHC but other than that the auction is off.

I have received many hateful PM's as well as the posts here. So - after the IHC, we're done.

    Thanks anyway.

Sorry but the AMOUNT OF BS FROM THIS FORUM IS OVERWHELMING

and there is no reason that anyone should have to put up with it when trying to help others.

    Any questions???? Ask RUSS.
  • oh - and for anyone that says "gee! What happened?" Just remember - you are part of the folks here, the ones that junp on others and represent YOU.

My hope was to present an award to the CU forum for thier contribution and have it published in the paper....oh well

Are you kidding me? You couldn't be father from the truth! You asked me for help and I gave you honest answers (and they werent even hateful at all). Yet you respond to me and insult me by saying I speak nothing but BS. I just re-read everything you said to me and your responses are much more hateful than mine.
  • okay - I have no idea what you're talking about. Sorry.

    I am done.

I know that I honestly tried to help you and did not PM you hateful, insulting, or BS statements and that is all that matters to me.
  • okie dokie - I guess everyone here is extrenely touchly feely or at least thats how it seems to me.

    don't want to bid? Don't.

    Want to help?
    Don't

    Want to? DO.

    What else is there?

I'm not going to nitpick the grade or the motive or anything else, as I think this is a neat thing to do, but you write:

<< <i>7) Winning bidder will be mailed the coin AND a receipt from the American Heart Association for their contribution >>

Wouldn't the person who donates the coin get the receipt, not the buyer, assuming the receipt was for tax purposes? If the winning bidder pays $50 for a coin worth $50, there's nothing for the buyer to deduct as they received goods and services equal to what they paid.

Arguably if the winning bidder pays $200 for a coin worth $50, the winning bidder could write off $150 (the amount over and above FMV which could be reasonably construed as their donation) and the person who donates the coin could write off $50 (the FMV). But I'm not a CPA or a tax lawyer, but what do I know?

Missed this thread the first time, and since it has come up again, what does this particular post mean?

And why decide not to help the AHA because of this forumimage

    Thanks in advance.
