Tony Kornheiser to join MNF team

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
Yes!

He's my favorite sports journalist...he's hillarious, sarcastic, and highly intelligent. Anyone who listens to his radio show or watches Pardon the Interruption knows what I am talking about.

He'll be joining Mike Tirico and Joe "I never get enough words in" Theismann. Suzy "I wannnna kisss you" Kolber and Michelle Tafoya will do sideline duties.

I am excited about the new team, hopefully they can get Theismann out of the booth after this year and let the pros in Tony and Tirico take care of business.

I don't think he knows as much as he should about the NFL to be a commentator. JMO.

The PTI team is fantastic - I never miss a show. Plus, they both give McNabb his proper respect image

Really? What gives you that idea? Has he ever come off as unknowledgable?

Just read that on ESPN. Theismann is VERY annoying.

I think Tony will put him in check...Joe overrides the 2 guys he's worked with...Tony isn't afraid to push back.
  • What is Madden going to do? Retire?

It just seems that Wilbon knows more about football than him, maybe it's just me...If you notice, Michaels did not have any long, drawn out goodbye story with Madden...I think they will both be on NBC, Madden's already there, I betcha we see Michaels there, too...

On this same topic, Greg Gumbel is going to back to the booth, #2 team will be him and Dan Dierdorf, with Enberg going down to #3 team with Randy Cross...James Brown is moving from Fox to CBS to be the Studio Host. I guess he really wanted to get back into NCAA Hoops, that's why he left. Finally, Bonnie Bernstein is leaving CBS to start her own broadcasting consulting firm. I'll miss her, she's cute...image

Michaels will not be on either this year, and who can blame him...he's had a long career with tons of different partners.

I think Tony is as well read and knowledgeable as anyone in sports journalism today...add in his sarcastic humor and I think you have an incredibly good combination.

Well...we'll have to wait and see how good Kornheiser is. Obviously he is there sort of like a Howard Cosell figure, but Tony Kornheiser is no Howard Cosell. I don't know Kornheiser's experience with live broadcasting but certainly live commentary of a game is different than a scripted TV show. Of course ad libs on a show like Pardon The Interruption really aren't ad libs - most everything is well scripted. Remember Dennis Miller and his annoying "ad libs" on a play five minutes after the play was over? The ability to think very fast is a necessity on live TV broadcasts of a game. For sure Kornheiser was probably tested first - somehow though I have the feeling that he is going to be a dissapointment. I think it would have been better for him to instead strictly do some sort of pre-game and halftime show. But again...we'll have to see how he performs.
  • Use to listen to Mr. Tony a few eyars back, he was good. Seems he isnt as good as he was, PLUS I dont think MNF is down his alley. I think he will, suck. Thats it, thats the list.

While the gist of PTI is scripted, a good part of it is off the cuff.

Miller is funny, but just didn't have the grasp of sports (or football in particular) to make it work.

I think Tony's a polarizing type of figure (much like Cosell)...you either love his humor or you hate it, but you still tune in to watch. PTI is (in my view) the most entertaining of ALL sports shows on either tv or radio, and it's always funny. Tony's no Cosell (who was a once in a lifetime type of figure...bigger than life), but I see the similarities.

I think it will be a much better show when they get Theismann out of there.

I love PTI, but I'm not sure about this MNF team.

As for Michaels, sounds like his heading to NBC is almost a done deal. I'd kinda like to see him with Madden again. They don't quite have the same Madden-Summerall synergy or whatever you want to call it, but I thought they clicked fairly well.

    Looks like you're wrong again...

Do you believe in switching networks? Yes!

Al Michaels is headed to NBC after ESPN hired former quarterback Joe Theismann, Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser and Mike Tirico as its Monday night broadcast crew.

He initially said he was going to sit this year out. So what, MNF is where it's going to be at.

I don't know about that. I don't know if Korn will be able to override my hatred of Thiesmann, I'll definitely enjoy Sunday night better.

I think what you've had with Theismann in the past is his being the big fish in that small pond of announcers. Neither McGuire or the other guy (can't remember his name for the life of me, and too lazy to go look it up) ever directly challenged him, never made him back down from his boisterous announcing style.

I think you have Tony, who's no shrinking violet, and who's smart enough to call Joe on his crap. It should make for some entertaining tv, if anything to have Joe's attitude stuffed right back at him.
