PCGS? I'll guess XF40. I don't think they'd call it XF45 because there is a touch too much chatter in the fields, despite its original look. NGC likely would grade it higher.

I don't remember the grade on it, but independent of that, I would probably say VF obv and EF rev

Solid AU-50. Some wear on the tip of the coronet and above the ear keeps it from a higher grade. I didn't look up this issue, but it looks fairly well struck, so I don't think that I am confusing wear with weak strike (but I have been known to be wrong image ).

XF40, maybe XF45 on a good day at the TPG.

But in all honesty it has the wrong the mint mark so who cares.image

Probably EF-40 or VF-35 on a bad day.

XF-40 all day, unless a lucky break at the TPG's, then XF-45. They tend to be harder on "O" mint HE's than they are w/C & D stuff.

    Got Crust....y gold?

Okay, here's the deal. The coin was graded several months ago and is in a PCGS VF-30 holder. I had previously purchased a PCGS XF-40 graded example of the same date/MM/variety. Viewing the coins side-by-side (this is the poor man's version of the story of the 1910-D MS-67 Barber dime, ex-Coinlieutenant and everyone else), I could not tell the difference. The strike, wear, marks, etc. were about the same. If anything, I like the originality of the VF-30 a bit more than the XF-40 and will probably sell the latter. For those who are unfamiliar with the date, the PCGS population for all grades is 29 coins in all grades, a bit more scarce than a 1910-D Barber dime!

    My conclusions:

    1. Sometimes the graders get the grade wrong. I think this coin is a solid XF-40 (and I should know!), perhaps a VF-35 on a bad day.
    2. Sometimes the nicer coin is graded lower than the not-as-nice coin. In fact, I see that a lot in southern gold.
    3. New Orleans gold is scarcer than Barber dimes, but hardly anyone cares.
    4. The next time I submit a coin to PCGS, I want MikeinFl and Longacre to grade the coins for me. image
    5. The fact that my grade is only two grades ahead of 291fifth's grade suggests that I may be too conservative. image

I'll bet you that PCGS downgraded it because of the hits around the eagle's head on the reverse. Anyone can see that it has XF40 detail by commercial standards.
